It looks like all the Anthony Travel tours are out in Scottsdale. I'd been planning on staying at Westin in Downtown Phoenix - but want to make sure I'm surrounded by Stanford fans!
Where're people staying for the Fiesta Bowl?
We made reservations at the Sheraton Crescent. 5 miles from the stadium.

I'm hoping to stay at a location that is affordable and within reasonable distance of:
a) the stadium
b) activities
c) delicious Mexican restaurants.
Any thoughts on this count?

I've spent some time in the Phoenix/Tempe/Scottsdale area and a major problem with this area is that everything seems to be about 12-15 miles away from where you are. Downtown Phoenix is also fairly boring. Scottsdale is a pretty good drinking town if that's your thing, which really isn't mine.Â

  You have plenty of options. You do have to pick between the Glendale (the stadium and the official pre-game tailgate) and Scottsdale (where the majority of fans, the pre-game parties, and the team will be).
  My (current) reservation is at the Zona Suites. It was recommended on the other board by a former player's dad who lives in Phoenix. I chose it because it's on the same grounds as the official team hotel, the Fairmont. I couldn't get a reservation at the Fairmont because it required more than one night, and I have to work Jan 1st. It is surprisingly affordable. The team hotel is the center of post-game activity.
  I'm hoping to have as much fun as I did as last year. South Beach was just wild, and the majority of visitors were wearing cardinal. I enjoyed having dinner with fullmetal, garvin, other posters, and parents of former players the night before the game. Greeting the players at the Fountainbleu postgame was unforgettable. I encourage anyone on the fence to go- a bowl game, particularly one of this magnitude, shouldn't be missed.Â

Oh man, have a great time everybody! I had such a blast at the Orange Bowl, especially meeting all the CardBoarders at the diner dinner that Garvin organized. To this day, I think about that wonderful milkshake with a slice of apple pie blended into it, and I think, 'WHY DOESN'T EVERYBODY DO THIS?" It was also fun hanging out with Fullmetal after the game and cramming into a room in the Fountainbleu to watch a replay of the game at 2am (sorry Fullmetal, I think I dragged you into staying for that one...).
I'm sad that I can't be there for this year's BCS bowl. We'll be in Australia for our honeymoon (thanks for the Wavelength recommendation Terry), but we'll be watching it from some sportsbar/internet connection somewhere down under.

Yes, Fairmont Scottsdale is official team hotel.
Anthony's Travel has the Westin Kierland (now sold out) and the Phoenician as "Official Fan Hotels".

Yes, Fairmont Scottsdale is official team hotel.

Ahh good times :) Hey, I was totally down for watching that game replay, and we did it in a hotel room with all of the then-current Axe Comm, iirc, as well as my alum friend from Austin who's ex-Axe Comm. Great times watching Luck and the TWU carve up VT. Nothing makes me think that VT is any better this year than they were last year. I remember that we stayed and watched the team exit the stadium to the acclaim and praise of the friends/family waiting outside too.
I think you'll have much better company for the bowl game this year ;)

What were your experiences with Va Tech fans? Did they seem friendly?

They seemed friendly enough, although the inebriated ones verged on belligerence often during the pre-game tailgate. Fortunately, all was well and no feelings really hurt. For some reason, "regional" comes to mind when describing the fans that I remember. Stanford had a lot of young alumni from all over the place.

Plans fell through. I'm not sure where I'm staying, except that it will be a Hilton property.
