Five days later, after a lot of consideration, I cast my vote in favor of Treebound's take--particularly the bolded portion.
I, too, thought the play calling at the end was too conservative. There is a chance of a fumble, interception, penalty on any play. Given that we had the best player perhaps ever to don a Stanford uniform in one of the biggest games in our football history running our offense, I think AL should have been given a couple chances to get it into the end zone. Failing that, we could have been closer for Williamson. When we started that drive on our own 20, I said: "Just like U.S.C. We have them exactly where we want them." A perfect situation for our quarterback to display his talents in a game-winning drive, against a defense that was tired and getting beaten. A field goal was not a stupid call, but it was called too early. Andrew should have been given a couple chances to get seven points or at least within "chip-shot" range.
And for anyone wondering, No, I have no coaching experience. I thought at the time that we had a U.S.C. redux (replay). I thought then and think now that a couple more (aggressive) plays would have been the right call. Go for the field goal if you're still not in the end zone.
Quote:Shaw went with the percentages, but I did not like watching the time tick off the clock from my seats in the stadium. You have the BEST player in college football in a generation and you take the ball out of his hands? He's not going to throw a pick 6. Give him a shot to lead the team into the end zone and win the game with his "signature moment!"  A play action rollout by Luck would have yielded either a first down, a td, a run to the sidelines or an incomplete. Luck is the best player and deserved at least a shot given his effort in the game, his return this year and his contributions to the program and the school overall.  If he can't move it then let a jittery freshman kicker (understandably so) take the shot ideally at least a few yards closer. Andrew deserved his chance to win this game!
