Quote:Sounds stricter - for better or worse. In my 80\'s FROSH dorm most parties involved kegs in the common areas - usually procured by the RA\'s.
At SCU in the late \'70s, there was a death when a drunken student climbed up on top of the bubble roof at Toso Pavilion. Until that time, I think the policy was fairly lax. I entered as a frosh in 1980, and the official policy was to keep alcohol in your dorm room, and all should be okay, though they would serve a light amount of alcohol (beer wine) at university functions.
That seemed to work pretty well, until about 4 months in, the university president, Fr. William J. Rewak had occasion to visit the freshman dorm. My girlfriend and I joined him on the ground floor elevator. He was in civvies, so to speak, and looked very young, essentially unrecognizable. There was pounding music, laughter, shouting, and the elevator opens on the second floor where an all-out party is blasting. Six drunk frosh with beer cups get in the elevator. The prez says icily..."having a party, boys?" Not one of the six recognizes him, but all agree quite loudly that they are having a party, that it is a great party, a world class party, etc.
The prez gets out on the fifth floor, the rest of us get out on 11 (top floor). Right before the door opens, one of the doofuses says, "Hey, I think that was Fr. Rewak!!" All thought it very funny.
Next week, a new policy. Alcohol only for seniors, and only in dorm rooms with door closed. No alcohol served at university functions where ANY student will be president. Kegs banned at off-campus housing. Any RA (resident assistant) found accountable for a party would lose their job. Sure, the students found ways around it. But it was quite a crackdown.
I will say this, though...if you invited a Jesuit to a party, the odds were that they would be bringing something stronger than anything you were serving...
