Stanford has, according to my count, 19 1st round NFL draft picks in its history. This year's NFL draft of four projected Stanford 1st rounders (Luck, Martin, DeCastro, Fleener) will represent 17% of all Stanford 1st round picks in NFL history. Only one time in NFL history has Stanford had more than one first rounder, in 1992 when Bob Whitfield went 8th and Tommy Vardell went 9th.
If Shayne Skov made it through this season intact, he might have been a 1st rounder too. Stanford will have come pretty close to having 1/5 the players its ever had drafted in the 1st round of the NFL draft, drafted this year.Â
Either this is a major anomaly or Stanford has reached some sort of tipping point to becoming a developer of top football talent. Not a bad stat to be throwing around on what seems like the biggest official visit weekend (in terms of amount of football recruit talent on campus) in Stanford history.
