Some recruits pick their school because the golf cart girl was hot. Others because pick schools because of the shoe affiliation, or the availability of video game equipment. So given that set of drivers, I would think a verbal to the last coach to visit your home is not so crazy.
But flip it around. Presume he verballed to Shaw on Saturday, or ended Saturday believing in Stanford. Hoke would still be able to come in on Sunday and attempt to convince him that he is making a big mistake. In this context, I would certainly prefer to be the last coach before the "hat picking day" because I could always get a chance to present a closing or counter argument with little concern of a rebuttal. And if I was a Michigan fan, I would like the idea that Hoke was last. Hard to argue that I second to last is better. It may not matter one way or the other, but if it matters last is clearly best.
If you believe Hoke is the ultimate closer for your all powerful state school, I think you relish the idea that he got to close out the home visits by coaches.
