Hehehe. Reasonable people can certainly disagree. The reason I made that statement is that I feel the pundits, talking heads, "experts" and voters, etc. place a lot of importance on recruiting classes and recruiting rankings and when they see the Pac-12 did well (finishing second behind only the SEC) I think it helps the conference garner respect, which translates into rankings which translates into BCS games, etc. -- since there isn't a playoff system like for college basketball, the opinion of individuals (whether they be coaches voting in the coaches poll, writers voting in the media poll, ESPN "experts" who are on TV 24/7, etc.) seems to matter quite a bit. So when the Pac-12 does well, it helps Stanford to do well. Just my opinion.

Plus there are a fairly large number of non-Stanford-eligible elite players who stick to the west coast -- proximity, family ties, weather whatever. Either they get distributed (like this year) or they concentrate at one or two programs (SC and Oregon being the logical candidates). As long as we are good, I'd rather have a distribution rather than a concentration. And while the rise of Washington is certainly worrying, it's mostly at the expense of Cal this year and, IMO, that's a good trade.

The Bear leans who went elsewhere are pretty widely distributed when you look at their eventual LOI destinations - UW and Tosh didn't end up getting that many.

Here's the 6 decommits C.al wanted and whiffed on and where they ended up:

Shaq Thompson UW, (Their biggest loss-Committed to UW after Lupoi left.  Cited graduation rates as deciding factor.)
Arik Armstead, Oregon  (Also a big loss - but not to UW)
Jordan Payton, UCLA  (What a ride - School near Oakland to UW to UCLA in 48 hrs)
Kenny Walker, UCLA  (A wide receiver who felt the Kiesau change (School near Oakland rcvr coach) more than Lupoi's)
Zach Hoffpauir, Stanford  (Well, we liked this one!)
Ellis McCarthy, UCLA  (Another C.al lean/commit but never seemed strongly attached to C.al)

Nope. To be fair UW reeled in a couple nice recruits that weren't Cal-oriented. But it's my guess Sarkisian hired Lupoi primarily for his defensive line coaching skill in 2012 and his recruiting in 2013.
