I found a 6-part interview with Curt Gowdy on Youtube. In part 4 he talks about the Rose Bowl broadcasts and singles out Stanford ('Jan. 71 and '72) as the most memorable for him. He said if it weren't for academic standards Lynn Swann and a slew of others had wanted to play there... he mentions John Ralston saying if it weren't for that issue he'd have been able to put together a football power. In a way I guess we kind of know that, but then again maybe it's only now that the program realizes it's potential. I'm not saying the academic standards are or should change, but with recruiting nationally and then in focusing on players that are a fit (as they seem to be doing), there is still the potential that Ralston spoke of maybe being somewhat realized at the present time.
