There are two separate eligibility limits -- 4 seasons of competition, and 5 calendar years after enrollment. The shorthand formulation is "5 years to play 4." Even if the player hasn\'t used his 4 seasons of competition, the general rule is that a player\'s eligibility is done after 5 calendar years. (The 5-year rule is subject to some exceptions -- for example, time spent on a church mission or military service doesn\'t count against the 5 years.)

When a player misses more than one season for reasons beyond his control (usually injury), a player can petition for a waiver of the 5-year rule. That\'s how McGillicuddy got his 6th year. The NCAA rules do not say the waiver is limited to one year. But I\'ve never heard of a case in which a player got a 7th year. I really doubt that the NCAA would grant a 7th year, but I don\'t really know.

LOL, I wished it was ten. Loved Berkeley so much I was set on grad school and a career in academia, especially after a few years in the corporate world. However, I soon found out grad school just isn\'t the same as undergrad.

Looking back, it is amazing how much life got crammed into just four years. Now I blink and four more years are gone.

LOL, I wished it was ten. Loved Berkeley so much I was set on grad school and a career in academia, especially after a few years in the corporate world. However, I soon found out grad school just isn\'t the same as undergrad.

Looking back, it is amazing how much life got crammed into just four years. Now I blink and four more years are gone.

Yeah, that was the dominant myth back then. Dropping acid  was safer than drinking alcohol because there were no lasting effects. ;)

Never heard that one, I might have come along too late. I don\'t know about long term, but I have to say that in my limited experience, the hangovers were MUCH more pleasant than with alcohol--more of an "afterglow."

Of course as I\'m sure you know, the time aspect is more an aspect of middle age and suburban life. However, I am happy to report that now that we are facing an empty nest, my wife and I are looking to move to Berkeley (or Oakland, San Francisco or my preference, Hawaii). Even if back in Berkeley, it won\'t be the same as being an undergrad, but at least I can afford the better restaurants and won\'t mind getting carded.
