Mark Madsen to be assistant coach

Interesting choice. Madsen has never struck me as the coaching type. He was always a "bull them over" with power rather than finesse mentality, which leads me to think he's less an X's and O's guy, but perhaps that's not fair an assumption. Based on my personal interaction with him, I think he'll do really well in the living room conversations with recruits. He's fairly charismatic and certainly exudes energy and confidence. He's got NBA championship rings on his fingers.
Is this just an attempt by Dawkins to connect to the golden age of Stanford basketball?
On a side note, I was chatting with my wife about the whole Justin Combs scholarship controversy and we brought up Madsen as an example of a Stanford player who certainly didn't need a scholarship to attend Stanford. He was probably one of the few NBA players whose dad makes more money than he did in the league (as an executive at Goldman Sachs, unless my intel is wrong.)

At least most NBA players have the wisdom to waste their wealth on hookers and blow, instead of the typical Goldman Sachs "let's invest in complex derivates and burn $6 billion."

Don't underestimate investment bankers! They're also good at wasting their wealth on hookers and blow. (Though I can't imagine either Madsen the elder or Madsen the younger doing so.)

My suspicion is Madsen will be a force as a recruiter, and that is why he is being brought in.Â

I also think that the team would benefit from learning Madsen's "Power Uberalles" style of play. After all, no matter how slow or clumsy you are, you can always get strong if you work hard enough.
This was also my strategy when I competed gymnastics. I figured Technique + Power = Success. Since I usually didn't have much technique, I was all about brute force.

Andy Katz on the return of Madsen: http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketba...basketball
I think that's a big reason, yeah. He might be a help with Jabari Parker--the personal insight Madsen can give him into going on a mission and then excelling on the basketball court might be very helpful to him. (that said, I very much doubt Parker goes Cardinal red.)
