How can you leave a pitcher in that long? Part of him has to have been enjoying it. I'm through with Stanford baseball, until they get a new coach.

However, I do think that Marquess subscribes to an out dated pitching philosophy that has an element of cruelty in it. I recall the phrases "let him fight through it" and character building" were part of the lexicon. What you ought to do in a situation such as that, is go get the ball, pat him on the back, and tell him, "you'll get 'em next time."
I can recall leaving sunken diamond shaking my head over the high pitch counts and/or the tendency to leave a starter in when he was clearly out of gas. The pros carefully monitor the pitch counts of pitchers who are often years older than these guys. I don't care whether all you have in the bullpen is a can of gasoline. Marquess puts the pitchers arms and psyches at risk with his approach.

If he took him out because of the pitch count, it's even worse than I thought it was. When a pitcher loses the strike zone like Appel did, you make one mound visit and then have him on a very tight leash. When Appel did throw a strike, it was a BP fastball. Leaving a kid out there in that situation is not good coaching. Sure, some bounce back, but some are never the same again.

:( Anyone catch a post-game interview? I heard the humidity was oppressive and that final exams were at hand as well...

The announcers said that Appel had to take a final after his game. The good news was that he was allowed to shower first. We are going to NYC to help wbbfan cope with the brutal ending.

There really is something to the humidity. Like Appel, I'm from Texas. So I grew up used to it. But a few years at Stanford, and come Game 3 against Rice in '03, I could barely breathe out there. I remember Garko, during a mound visit, saying it felt like he had a space suit on. Lots of similarities to this past weekend (rain had recently come through, high humidity, opponent from the tropics--at least humidity wise, pitchers suddenly can't find the zone, bat speed slows down so few extra base hits). Makes me wonder if there's some warehouse near Stanford that can simulate the conditions.

cardhorn, I live in Austin (much less Houston), and I think Appel is from Houston originally despite having graduated from Monte Vista HS in northern California. I also agree that the difference is significant. I think if it hadn't been finals season, Marquess would have been able to take his team out to Tallahassee with enough time to acclimate to the weather. Also, note the rainout of game two--lots of moisture in the air there :(
