Muir has said that his move his move from Georgetown to Delaware was driven by football and by the chance to build a strong overall program. This is from yesterday's Mercury News: "I missed football Saturdays," he said, noting that the sport is more popular at Delaware than Georgetown. "There was a chance to grow a number of programs. I thought it would be a great experience. From the outside, I could see why people would ask, 'Why make that move?' But obviously, it worked out well."
Muir said something similar when he was hired by Delaware in 2009 (from the Washington Post): "The football piece is an important one with my background," said Muir, 40, reached by telephone. "That was really something that was important, along with building a program across the board."
My interpretation: Georgetown was all about men's basketball. The coach, John Thompson, reportedly has the power with respect to basketball, and the administration closely supervises the basketball program. I think Muir wanted a broader program, including football, and wanted to run his own show rather than taking a back seat to the basketball coach.
Average football attendance last year was 2,568 at Georgetown and 19,018 at Delaware. Delaware's football team has reached the Div. I FCS championship game three times in the last nine years.
