I don't think so. Shaw has made clear he is not interested in the NFL, and wants to be at Stanford, as evidenced by his recent contract extention (that he negotiated himself). John Clayton was on SportsCenter yesterday and he did not even mention Shaw as a potential NFL coach when he was specifically talking about potential college coaches who could be NFL candidates.
He mentioned Chip and Brian Kelly, Doug Marrone, Bill O'Brien, but no mention of David Shaw. Because of the Rooney Rule, you would expect Shaw to get a lot of attention in terms of interviews. But if he doesn't take interviews, he's clearly not interested. My guess is Clayton has talked to enough people in the NFL to conclude Shaw isn't being offered any NFL interviews because he is not accepting them, and Shaw to the NFL is a non-story.

FWIW, I think Shaw will be with us for at least another couple of years.
After that, who knows, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
Shaw's comments about how he wants to stay at Stanford sound sincere, and I don't think he is an insincere kind of guy.

During the game broadcast, Musberger said if he was hiring an NFL coach, Shaw would be at the top of his list. Herbstreit asked him if he was trying to run Shaw out of college football and said he wanted Shaw to stay in college (or something to that effect). They basically closed out the discussion by bringing up that during interviews leading up to the game Shaw was asked about NFL jobs and he said his contract extension was done in part to put the NFL talk to rest.
Another thing to further bludgeon this horse with is the fact that during Shaw's post-game interview he basically said this Rose Bowl is great, and his greatest take away is that the program is "still ascending." He said he still doesn't think Stanford has earned the respect other teams like Oregon and USC have at the national level, and he can't wait to get to work on being even better next year. Coaches who are leaving probably do not say such words. They suggest Shaw takes it personally to keep Stanford at the top.

The timing of the contract extension suggests that, at least for now, not only is Shaw not interested in considering an NFL job he's not even interested in using explicit NFL interest as a lever in negotiating his extension. Of course, he may not have needed any extra leverage given the on-field performance of the team, but still, I think its is telling.

Adam Schecter showed up on Boston sports talk radio this morning. I caught the tail end of the conversation which was about NFL job openings. After going through the coaches with rings that are on TV (Gruden & Cowher), he started going through other potential names. Shaw was the first name he said, and that there is a lot of chatter about him. He also said there was no single name that everybody was obsessed with like last year (Chip).

Shaw and the university must have a deal about the offer Shaw truly can't refuse. But I think the bar is set pretty high. Shaw may also see himself as better off in the college game than the pros, somewhat similar to Saban. I just hope he sticks around for a while yet. I really admire him.

I see Shaw going to the NFL someday. But not until he proves that he can the whole thing at Stanford, or to himself that he can't. I don't see him taking another college job. The guy is too much of a homer. He must also realize he has a massive recruiting advantage from his current perch: first hand experience as a student-athlete, credible continuity, relationship with the university. Plus the headaches at other major programs are completely different: academic eligibility, criminality, and unreasonable boosters/fans. Stanford is a much better platform to the NFL than other college jobs. I hope the same can be said for our assistants (cough Mason). I'd much rather see Mason in the NFL.

Honestly, I think much of the D-Shaw speculation is more of a Rooney rule issue. He is a legitimate prospect and meets the Rooney rules. That said, I do not see him leaving in the next 5-8 years. Nor do I think, from my experience with him, he takes kindly to being Rooney racial material. I expect him to tell most of those teams to take a long walk off a short pier if he suspects that.

I think Lovie Smith will be filling in those duties this year. Someone really ought to hire him, and then make sure he gets a good OC.

Wilner is my favorite reporter for college footbal. I like that he expresses his own opinion freely and doesn't worry about detractors. I like how his rankings ignore the hoopla, and he focuses (as best as he can) strictly on the merits and resumes of the relevant teams. Most importantly, he seems to be the most knowledgeable football reporter when it comes to Stanford football.
