Add in the students and it should imply that the entire West side will be soldout for every game, and the best areas of the East side will be filled routinely with season ticket holders. However, the non-family plan end zone (South) and the edges of the east side will not have season ticket holders.

In that past, I've heard talk of other team's fans (ND, US.C, even Ca.l) buying Stanford season tix because they are so cheap, just so they have their seats booked for the one game they care about. People have used this dynamic to explain why the number of butts in seats doesn't match the announced tickets sold, etc. Is this really that widespread a ticketing strategy? I guess if I were a hard core fan living in the Bay Area and this was my once a year chance to watch my team in person, I would consider that strategy, but it seems like a high cost to pay ($250 for cheapest season tix).
I've definitely been surprised (and dismayed) by the number of opposing fans who flooded my sunny side section on game days against top opponents. It would be even more disappointing to find that my section-mates where just trying to turn a profit for the games where their support would be most valued.

A lot of the people doing the buying will live in Oregon. And it actually is a reasonable strategy, for them. You can buy a very good season ticket for $300-$500 from the AD right now. Then you KNOW you will have a ticket to the game you want to attend. Any other strategy may leave you open for fraud, bad seats, hyped game day street prices, etc.
Then, if you care, you can list the other tickets on Stubhub. You probably could get $500 from the transactions. UCB tickets should sell for $150 easily. Notre Dame tickets could command even more if Stanford or Notre Dame is in BCS CG territory.
The UW and UCLA tickets should clear $50 without much trouble. ASU and SJSU will likely get nothing, but even $20 each adds to the haul.
So, in theory, as a Duck fan you could attend the game you care about for free, but at a minimum you get good seats, authentic tickets, and can then plan your trip down with certainty.

I know the Stanford alumni base is small and far flung, but it sure would be nice to be able to sell 40K season tickets to Stanford fans, have another 6K go to students, 5K for visitor tickets, and sell the remaining 4K on game day for walk-up crowds.

if there were 30K "season ticket holders" then I would bet there were in excess of 60K season tickets as not many season ticket holders buy only one ticket.
