I might be missing a guy or two, but all these guys have fathers who played in the NFL.

NFL legacy children may account for up to 0.01% of college age kids (a total guess, bu probably very liberal.) I'm sure Stanford is not representative, but even if the average school has 3-5% of players from NFL legacy, that is a 300-500X increase in probability of playing college football if your dad played in the NFL.

I'm sure that having an NFL legacy dad is hugely predictive of making to the NFL, in comparison to all HS football players. From my high school, two kids in the last 20 years have made it to the NFL. Both of their dads also played in the league.

Christian McCaffrey is the kid I want most of all in this class. And, yes, it's mainly because I'm a sentimental old fool. But not totally out of my mind. Easy Ed McCaffrey makes it onto my Stanford All-Time starting offense. Which means, I know, leaving some really good Stanford WRs on the sideline. But Eddie McCaffrey had what Harbaugh loves, Shaw and staff loves, and is supposedly the leitmotif in all our recruiting: he was a ball player. Had the instincts. Had the height and athleticism, too...but what separated him from others and gave him such a long career w/ Denver Broncos was his instinct for the game. He was a disciplined and outstanding blocker on downfield plays. Just somehow knew how to get separation. Loved contact. Made the tough, go-to catches.

As an aside: Being the best football player in Colorado isn't automatically high praise. Colorado is about on par with Utah in the quality of HS players it produces. Take a look at the Univ. of Colorado roster and match origins against the (few) playmakers the Buffs have. Makes you wonder what Mike MacIntyre was thinking when he dumped San Jose for the Buffs. It got harder, not easier at the name school.

As an aside: Being the best football player in Colorado isn't automatically high praise. Colorado is about on par with Utah in the quality of HS players it produces. Take a look at the Univ. of Colorado roster and match origins against the (few) playmakers the Buffs have. Makes you wonder what Mike MacIntyre was thinking when he dumped San Jose for the Buffs. It got harder, not easier at the name school.
Christian McCaffrey is the kid I want most of all in this class. And, yes, it's mainly because I'm a sentimental old fool. But not totally out of my mind. Easy Ed McCaffrey makes it onto my Stanford All-Time starting offense. Which means, I know, leaving some really good Stanford WRs on the sideline. But Eddie McCaffrey had what Harbaugh loves, Shaw and staff loves, and is supposedly the leitmotif in all our recruiting: he was a ball player. Had the instincts. Had the height and athleticism, too...but what separated him from others and gave him such a long career w/ Denver Broncos was his instinct for the game. He was a disciplined and outstanding blocker on downfield plays. Just somehow knew how to get separation. Loved contact. Made the tough, go-to catches.
OK, enough praise for Ed. My theory is that unlike true QB talent, the instinct for the game can be passed on because it is a mix of nature and nurture. I've linked one story below, but there are others that talk about the same things: Christian's competitiveness, his nose for the ball, his drive. His team is successful, but as an individual he would be successful regardless of how good the team around him is. If he's got Easy Ed's nurture as well as nature-- and his HS career certainly points to that-- I want him lining up for us.
