The Pac 12 announced some changes to its bowl ties today. We re-upped with the Holiday Bowl, which will take our #3 team. Instead of playing the Big-12 we now face the Big-10.Â
Meanwhile the Fight Hunger Bowl is now the #4 Pac-12 bowl, supplanting the Sun Bowl (starting in 2014 when the new 49er stadium is ready). It too has partnered with the Big 10.
The interesting and potentially irritating part of this is that the Big 10 will not commit to slot a top team but will instead assign a team based on some kind of "tiering" system, which sounds to me like code for "stick them with Indiana or Minnesota, whichever is closer". Â
Is this the best we can do? I personally prefer the Big 12 match-ups over the Big 10, outside of the Rose of course. I am guessing they have decided to go in a different direction given that we've now lost the Sun and Holiday match-ups.Â
