UCB fan pride in "The Play" always gives me a chuckle. The greatest moment in living history is a random set of circumstances that led to their team winning. I mean, does anyone analyze that play and try to evaluate how to reproduce it on the field? Did they run that "play" in practice like preparing for 2 minute drills or end zone situations? The fact that they take so much pride in being on the winning end of that "play" speaks volumes in itself for both their lack of accomplishment since as well as their definition of success.

OT, I've been amused at a thread on BI that I've been tracking for a few days. Apparently Sonny has put his foot in his mouth a couple of times in recent weeks. The first gaffe was in response to a question about his salary; he responded by saying that he would love to trade his situation for the cushy position of tenured professor to have guaranteed employment and 6 months of vacation a year, even if at a lower salary. Then, he was meeting with some female fans and essentially thanked them for allowing their husbands to spend their husbands money on Cal football. You're not in LA anymore, Mr. D.ykes. Funnier than the gaffes themselves are the comments by posters trying to defend their new savior by putting down the B.erkeley community at large for their lack of sense of humor. To be fair, I've met quite a few UCB students who seemed entirely without a sense of humor.

Personally, I think D.ykes should be called out for both statements. They're relatively minor slip ups, but he needs to get the feedback that anti-intellectualism and male chauvinism are not values shared by his new fanbase. I'm not saying that he should be crucified for trying to make some lame jokes, but he needs to get the message.

I'm with ya on the male chauvinism lesson, FarmBoy, but is questioning the need to give professors tenure featuring "guaranteed employment and 6 months of vacation a year" (or at least highlighting how unprecedented such perks would be in the "real world", or questioning "fairness" conclusions drawn simply from current-salary data) really "anti-intellectualism"?  That comment probably didn't endear him to the faculty, but there's more than a nugget of substance to his underlying point there.

I doubt he really believes it, but back in LA, where football was more important than school, and the fans were probably anti-intellectual (those liberal professors, grrrr), this was probably an effective strategy. So rather than give an honest answer about the value a good football program brings to the university, he cast disparaging remarks on the people tasked with the core mission of the university: educating CA future workers and leaders. At a minimum, it shows a lack of respect for the academic side of the house.

Here's my last encounter with a Kal alum that I wasn't already friends with, and his idea of humor.  It was after the 2010 Big Game viewing event in Boston.  We had to go to the nearby Bed Bath and Beyond to get something.  I see a 59er in a Kal sweatshirt and he's giving me the stink eye.  He then walks by and crop dusts me!  This is a small town.  I never forget a face.  We're bound to meet again and I'm gonna to tell the story to everybody present.
