I'm fine with players engaging this topic and joining the discussion. This issue merits a conversation, and the players have every right, seems to me, to participate in it.

1) Agree it is topical and Ben should feel free to opine.

Everyone is entitled to his opinion, but I have to think the idea of Stanford players hanging out on Quad (or the internet or wherever) peddling autographs and memorabilia to the highest bidder is a little unsavory and not what Stanford athletics is supposed to be about.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned though.

The players should be free to express their opinions, and coaches should not muzzle them unless they're blabbing about team business (which they're not, in this instance). Perhaps this is a good time for coaches to review the multitude of NCAA rules, though.

This reminds me of the Ohio State incident — free tats for signed jerseys, wasn't it? That didn't turn out so well for those players, as I recall.

It's possible that nothing happens. The sources who have spoken up about Manziel saw him sign autographs, but did not see an exchange of money. If no one decides to give evidence, and if Manziel was paid in cash, the NCAA won't be able to do a thing.

I agree with you, JPRI. But I don't see how Shaw or anybody else could tell these guys they aren't allowed to have an opinion, or to express it. It's not like they're disclosing private team business.

given the typical pace of NCAA investigations (see for example Cam Newton) I'd be surprised if it is wrapped up before Jan 8, 2014, unless of course A&M losses 2 or 3 early season games.......

Seems like a perfectly sensible belief for a Stanford athlete to hold. Stanford athletes should be smart enough to realize that: a) they're cogs in an enormously lucrative business; and b) many of athletes at schools that don't take academics as seriously as Stanford are being used and then essentially discarded without any meaningful compensation.

I would argue that a full ride to Stanford is meaningful compensation, while a full ride to Texas A&M, if you enter without the necessary academic preparation to succeed in the classroom, may not be.
