Really surprised by the blow back on both sides, particularly from Berkeley. Both schools want to re-balance their home schedules and this is the easiest way to do it, since it does not involve scheduling with other programs. To switch the home alternation, somebody has to skip hosting one year. Here C.al skips '14, but at least it is a cool new venue in its inaugural season (and Levi Stadium hosts a Big Game before a Super Bowl), a grand total of 13 miles from Stanford.
Playing off-campus one time isn't going to kill anyone. Lots of griping about the Great America parking lot sans Eucalyptus, but how often do you get to tailgate near the mighty San Tomas Aquino and its super awesome pedestrian/bicycle trail and cool impressionist retaining walls?!! (Shameless work plug.)
I think it is a great idea.
So if you are a C.al student entering in the fall of '14, this is what it was going to be.

Stanford does sacrifice more in that respect, but they really do want to get more than one marquee game (USC) in the even years. An incoming freshman would be "robbed" of one on-campus Big Game, to be replaced by a twenty minute ride down 101. One advantage to delaying this move until say 2020 or 2025 -- the City of Santa Clara is talking big about some massive entertainment/residential/commercial complex across Tasman Drive, which is currently occupied by the Santa Clara Municipal Golf Course on the old landfill. I've been told it will rival Vegas, but some boosterism may have been involved. (Monorail! Monorail! Monorail!....)
All the talk about missing out on showing children and grandchildren the old college stomping grounds (at one game ever) is bunk. Geeze, you can fondly show them that spot you tossed the prairie dog back out onto the lawn during the UCLA game. The Rose Bowl and Coliseum aren't on college campuses. Somehow the LA schools survive. One game!
Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working
