Stanford and Arizona State each have faced three AP ranked teams.  Here are their respective key statistics--surprising, dissimilar, and perhaps telling numbers--against those teams.

ASU: 3.35 per carry, 5.1 yards per carry allowed (-1.8 yards)
Stanford:  5.1 yards per carry, 2.5 yards per carry allowed (+2.6 yards)

ASU: 7.0 yards per pass attempt, 123 PER; allowed 8.3 yards per attempt and 147 PER (-1.3 yards, -24 PER)
Stanford: 8.7 yards per pass attempt, 149 PER; allowed 6.3 yards per attempt and 119 PER (+2.4 yards, +30 PER)

ASU has performed much worse than ranked teams; Stanford has performed much better.

Pass efficiency rating. I'm not a fan of the NCAA's stat as it doesn't take into account running and sacks (and puts an overemphasis on completed pass percentage, which makes Stanford's pass defense look worse than it does.)
