Stanford's current uniforms are a great reflection of the character of the team - classic, no-flash, and understated.  I would not change a thing about them - home or away.  I would personally favour getting rid of the black uniforms they wear once or twice a year.  Let Oregon and whoever else wear their flashy, fast-food, gimmick uniforms all they want, which go along with their garbage football - that is not reflective of the nature of this team, and I hope never will be.

i think it's good for the stanford football players to wear something more aggressive and/or flashy once or twice a season.  you gotta remember, these are 18-22 year olds, the majority of them probably get a brobdingnagian kick out of wearing the black unis.

The traditional S is a great look--but I wouldn't like a small version on the helmet. If it were scaled proportionately larger, I would be in favor of seeing it on the helmets for Big Game or something...but the block S is where it's at.

I don't think MSU does, or at least I haven't seen it. NC State uses a block S that can look a lot like ours at a quick glance:

It is also well established that some species, like zebras, have evolved with markings that disrupt the vision of preditors. If there have been any studies, Phil Knight was not involved.

The Block S with tree is generally used for the academic wing of the university, though this is not a rule.  The plain Block S has been around for a very long time and has recently (in the last 10-20 yrs?) shifted into a primarily athletics design.

It doesn't appear to be as simple as athletic vs. non-athletic. Although the simple block S is used by athletics only, the S with tree has been used in athletic contexts at least 30 years. It is deemed acceptable in all informal uses. (i.e. not between departments, or in academic or research contexts.)
