First of all, please know that in no way am I suggesting that this was the reason for yesterday's loss, but something strange happened during the fourth quarter. You might remember that just before the kick off after Stanford's last field goal, the officials announced that there had been a clock error on the previous possession, so the clock was being reset from 5:05 to 4:15, a significant change. I was at the game, so we had no explanation other than that.
I just finished watching the recorded broadcast, and at first I thought they must not have restarted the clock after the penalty on the first field goal try, but that couldn't have accounted for fifty seconds. It turns out that the clock stopped after Hogan's sack on second down, then didn't run at all until after the screen to Sanders on the following play. They ended up getting it right, and I guess that's all that matters, but what's surprising is how far back they went to find the error. I always thought that once a play is run, you can't go back to make corrections involving previous plays, but they went back four plays.
Again, it all worked out for the best. Stanford was lucky to get three points on that sequence, and if the error hadn't been fixed and we had managed to score a touchdown on that final drive and the erroneous stoppage had been discovered after the fact -- as it surely would've been -- all would've broken loose.

Please clear the field! The game is not over!
