Best hire of this off season by far...

James Franklin at Penn State.  He is a winner who performed a miracle at Vandy.  Mason will be hard-pressed to keep it going.  I look forward to seeing Franklin work his magic at his next restoration project.

Mason could prove to be a winning choice but without HC experience, one can only guess if he has what it takes to lead a program.  Add in the fact that he is coaching in the best conference in the country...  Wow.  Good luck to him.....

In a tennessean.com article Mason commented on the evolution of the defense from 2010, which I thought was interesting (while I wait eagerly to find out who replaces Mason, Kotulski and Sanford)...

“We had a great staff at Stanford and we took the first two years of our defense being in place (2010-2011) and looked at why we weren’t successful,” Mason said. “If you look at what my strengths have been, it had a lot to do with being able to make adjustments and changes to what you do. We had to look at what we were doing structurally and we modified it. We made it easier for our guys to get lined up, play fast and make calls and adjustments.

“I think it has to do with the deception of (Oregon) trying to create numbers, trying to create mismatch problems. What we did was make it simple for our guys. When you allow smart players to get lined up to play football versus trying to out-scheme your opponent, you allow the guys to play with confidence. And when they play with confidence, they can play fast and physical.”

I remember comments from Tarver that preached the same philosophy. Any chance they lure him back from the Raiders?

Further, I didn't know much about Vavae Tata but apparently he'll coach Vandy's defensive line... meaning might have been a candidate to take over after Randy Hart.

I have been intrigued with trying to understand why Stanford is so successful v. teams that play the spread O but struggle against more physical, power-oriented O's.  I think the article gave us some clues why this is happening.  It will be interesting to see how the new DC addresses this issue in the future.

I think struggle is kind of an overstatement. USC and MSU had less than 100 rushing yds combined against Stanford. Throw in the OSU total and the 3 "power" teams get just north of 100 yards rushing. Utah ran well (176yds) but got to play against a 3rd string NT.

The three losses aren't even truly similar. Utah and USC got a lead by changing their tendencies early and hung on as Stanford came back. MSU is really the only team that has been able to come back on Stanford and win.

Offensive play calling has been frustrating as watching it live you hope they do certain things more, but the box score often refutes that. It may be that our comfort level with close games just removed our willingness to try certain things (outside runs, short patterns).

Given the changes that have happened since the end of the season, my hope is that the defense won't be called on to hold everyone under 20 points for a win.
