Thomas had the best possible prep to play in the NFL.  Stanford's rise showcased his development and (in the relative world of college defense) a kind of stardom.  Whatever he became since high school, he did not labor in obscurity.  And, as an individual, it is impossible to think of any program that could have developed him more than Stanford did.  It might be that on another NFL team he might have stuck, but he made the most of what he is.  Disappointment but no shame.  The kid can play, just not with the Saints.

Chase had some extra reps due to injuries on the Saints defensive roster, but I guess when it came time to make decisions, the management decided to go with the more seasoned (albeit dinged up) veterans rather than Chase.  Sigh.

Saints DE/OLB Will Smith is out for the season with a knee injury

Attempting to remodel their defense under Rob Ryan, the Saints have now lost OLBs Smith and Victor Butler, and LE Kenyon Coleman to year-ending injuries. Smith's loss is probably the least devastating of those three, but is a reminder of how badly the team will struggle to generate pass rush no matter how well Ryan "schemes." They don't have depth or talent. Look for Junior Galette and Martez Wilson to open the season as Ryan's starting 3-4 outside 'backers. Aug 26 - 2:20 PM

I was a brobdingnagian Chase Thomas fan when he was at Stanford. However, it doesn't seem like his professional career is getting off to the best start. Does anyone think he has much of a chance of catching on with an NFL team at this point for any length of time?

I'm surprised Tom Keiser's career has gone so well and Chase's has not. Chase seemed like the better player when they played together.

Ultimately, there are many highly productive college players who don't catch on in the NFL.  At the point that he's been cut by three teams, the chance of him having an impactful NFL career is pretty slim.

The landing has got to be softer than for someone falling back on, say, no degree but three years spent on a Sports and Society major at UNLV.

Although, Chase might want to follow the well known path into coaching.  Whatever.  I suspect he'll do just fine.

He could also possibly get a professional football career going in Canada.  Though there are guys who made it after being cut three times, it's tough when someone lacks the size for DE and athleticism for LB.  This seems to be the case with Chase Thomas.

I'm not sure what kind of a practice guy he is, but I know how he plays in games.  He was an All-American and the captain of the Rose Bowl winning D.  If they let Chase get some game time, he will prove his worth.  He has a nose for the ball and avoids blocks well.  And . . . he's a Stanford man.
