Specifically all three boats won their respective semifinals (by extremely tight margins in some cases) to advance to their respective grand finals, which ensures a finish of no worse than 6th place in each of their events (and means Stanford will earn more Directors Cup points).  This is an amazing accomplishment (winning all semifinals), and all that's left for the women is for them to win their races tomorrow and call it a weekend (and a season, and possibly a championship). 

Kind of nervous for them, but I trust the team's results this year.  Go Stanford!

The Cardinal moved out to a one second lead over the Lady Bears at 500 meters.  Bears drew even at 1000 and led by two seconds at 1500,  Cardinal narrowed the gap to finish second by 1.3 seconds.  Great start for the final day.

Just a note on the changing face of women's rowing:

Ohio State has two South Africans, a New Zealander, an Aussie, and a French rower in their varsity eight (plus two Americans).  That's some intense recruiting work.

kal has two Norwegians, a New Zealander, and an American Olympic medalist in their varsity eight.

Washington has two Brits, three Aussies, a New Zealander, and a Canadian (silver medalist from the '11 Worlds Lwt 2x, '12 Olympian) in their varsity eight.

Stanford has one Aussie, one New Zealander, and one Swede (competed for USA at 2013 U-23 Worlds) in the varsity eight.

Brown and Michigan both have completely American crews.

Note that most international rowers have junior, U-23 or better natl team experience, if not medals.  At first glance, I would say that women's rowing has better parity than men's rowing, and it is also becoming just as internationally diverse as men's rowing is.  Amazing how the sport has grown.
