I sat and had lunch with Jonathan Winters several decades ago. He is always "on" and seemed certifiable but funny as can be. Very nice man.

So just got around to seeing Boyhood today.
Curious as to your thoughts. Saw it with my college daughter who liked it a good deal. My initial thought was that it was kind of a flick that more men than women would relate to, but after thinking about it, don't necessarily feel that way.

The spouse and I saw A Most Wanted Man last week. I thought it was very good, though my husband was very frustrated with the ending. Philip Seymour Hoffman's performance was just spectacular.

My wife was out of town with the kids a few weeks back, so I ended up checking out a few films: Boyhood, Chef, and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Boyhood was good, but not great. While it was fascinating to see the children grow before our eyes, the story was not very compelling, the writing felt a bit amateurish and some of the acting was stilted, in my opinion. Arquette and her professor husband were particularly bad. The only seen with Arquette that I believed was her final scene at her kitchen table. It was definitely worth seeing for it's uniqueness, but it did little than pass the time for me.
Chef was nice, but predictable and formulaic. Still, Favreau chews up scenery nicely and I liked a lot of the characters. Worth seeing, but not a great film.
Guardians of the Galaxy was a surprise pleasure. I actually had no interest in seeing it until a neighbor invited me and I didn't want to be anti-social. Chris Pratt has a lot of charisma and the jokes were so well written and the physician humor, much of it done with animation and live action interplay was very well done. Chef was a nice confection. I was happy to see the sexpot get to play in something other than a cartoon.

I think that Boyhood simply isn't a comparable film to just about anything. I think I could see someone thinking it was overpraised beyond the initial clever idea that it is based on. I wouldn't respect that opinion all that much, but anyone who has recently spoken to a teenage boy or an alcoholic knows the dialogue is going to be pretty stilted.Â
I'm still thinking about the movie and will be thinking about it for months and years to come.Â
We can talk about issues of great import and see films that address great topics, but the idea of this film about the simple passage of time pretty much hit me like -- not like a ton of bricks -- but like the inevitable passage of time.Â

I know it is panned, disrespected, etc. But we watched our first 3D movie tonight, on our new (today) Sony 4K set, Gravity, and it was very different than watching it sometime ago in regular. Interesting, with a few Holy Sh.it moments for us old guys. No fuzziness, no blurs, great color, smooth motion. Watched the HBO On Demand version on Fios. Does anyone else find this format interesting?

Yeah, I was thinking of pre-hospital care. I took an EMT-B course but never sat for the registry exam. Probably should have, just for kicks.
ACLS/BLS are certifications that hospital healthcare providers are required to have, but I'm not sure if they're required for EMT licensure at any level. They do seem to be more endorsements than certifications.

Just a reminder that the super great Boyhood is out on DVD! (If it is out I am sure there is a copy of Chef available.)
But seriously, this week Marc Maron's WTF podcast had a really great interview of Paul Thomas Anderson and a very solid one of Richard Linklater.Â
PTA is just awesome and the interview made me want to rewatch all his stuff. Linklater was just so damn down to earth that it took the interview a while to get going, but by the end you realize what a blue collar badass Linklater is.Â
Maron is a terrific interviewer, especially when the guest is not a comedian he already knows.
