Holy ****! I've been following the draft predictions pretty closely, and I did not see that one coming. Huestis only showed up as a second rounder in a few mock drafts the last couple of weeks.
That said, he certainly has the athleticism and defensive ability to play in the NBA. Here's hoping he can make the Thunder's roster.

The second coming of Landry Fields? Congrats to the Huestis family.
I like Huestis. He was an athletic dynamo on the team, but he's not a great shooter and his decision making is sometimes suspect. It will be interesting to follow his career. Hope he sticks in the league.

I can see why he was drafted ahead of Powell. I think Powell has already shown his ceiling while Huestis is still a project on the offensive end. If he can develop an outside shot, he could be good off the bench.

Powell taken in the second round. So this means that Stanford had 2 NBA draft picks playing on the team this year. That suggests the team had a lot of talent.
I doubt Stanford Hoops is in the reload phase, so I guess Stanford Hoops will need to rebuild just to get back to the glory days that we knew as the 2013-2014 season. ::)

I'm guessing OKC sees through its optimistic goggles more Kenneth Faried than Landry Fields. Speculation was that OKC, one of the youngest teams in the league, would not draft two in the first round and instead make a trade. If Huestis is with the Thunder, the organization generally does a decent job of supporting its draft picks.
Without great offensive options at center (unathletic Kendrick Perkins, older guy Nick Collison, and now second-year player Steven Adams) , OKC might see Huestis as helping provide a legit "small ball" option when their power forward Ibaka moves to the center spot. However, the Thunder have mostly preferred to have a true center paired with Ibaka.
The CBS Sports story mentions Roberson but he's basically a non-contributor, so Huestis is landing in a place that, yes, has a roster that's mostly set, but also a team I think will be hoping for him to contribute in his rookie year if he can show good hands (Westbrook's passes have some heat) and *just enough* ability to get a shot off against NBA defenders.

Per Y! Sports and general assessment, he has a pretty similar skill-set to that of Kawhi Leonard coming out of SDSU (albeit Kawhi's more integral role on that 3x-3 team, including tournament play).
Given the latter's amazing performances the past year or so, I could how an NBA GM rolled the dice.

I was listening to Tom Tolbert interview Larry Riley on KNBR. Larry is the Warriors' director of scouting. HE was not overly enthusiastic about Huestis' prospects, saying that maybe he could play in the D-league or Europe, definitely second round talent at best. Glad to see that OKC is backing him.

Huestis might be a Thabo Sefolosha replacement (as defensive specialist). No speculation on how Huestis would fit into OKC's offense though.

With Durant, Westbrook, and Ibaka, is there a need for offense? (assuming OKC can hold onto all three of them). They may be looking for more of a "glue guy" who can hustle, play lock down defense, and make the occasional play when there's an offensive breakdown.

Some are trying to give Dawkins credit for his development, but having watched most of that growth up close I think the credit goes to Maddog. The vast majority of Huestis' (and Powell's) development happened during their junior years when Maddog was on the staff and was working with those two day in and day out.
Dawkins record on development remains spotty at best, and unfortunately he's going to need some major development success if this year's team is going to even be .500

Yes, absolutely. Too easy to shut down limited offenses deep in the playoffs in today's NBA. Of course, since OKC are keeping Scott Brooks to kick around, they probably won't improve in variety/scheme quality at the offensive end anyway.
