BBC yesterday ran a story on anti-semitism in the U.S. Part of it featured about eight Klansmen assembled in a expansive Missouri pasture wearing their garb and carrying flags. They were shouting through a bull horn at a group of about a dozen standing a couple hundred feet away. One guy in the group of onlookers would yell and pump his fist in the air.  The camera pulled back to a wide shot. I've seen more people at a radio-controlled model airplane club meet. brobdingnagian field. And there was this little knot of garbed klansmen up at one edge.Â
I read the Freedom of Expression and Campus Speech Codes piece with a mixture of: 1) admiration for the ideas and expressiveness of the writing. 2) a vision of White Plaza or UCLA's central campus with Nazis or Klansmen spewing their same message day after day. Maybe I'm losing my faith in humanity to remain humane, but I can't imagine how it could end without violence.Â
