The blog would have you believe that one game into the season, after posting a game where his QB rating was 231, Hogan is not one of the top eight quarterbacks in the Pac-12 (5 ranked and three honorable mention).  Never mind that his QB rating was second only to Mariotta, his yards per attempt were third (Mariotta and Travis Wilson), his completion percentage was the best in the Pac-12, and his three touchdowns were tied for fourth, despite the fact that he was pulled one series into the second half.  Nope, Hogan is a below-average QB in the Pac-12.

You know, maybe the fact that he only threw it 16 times (fewest among Pac-12 starters) might have had something to do with it, you dolts.

The snub of Hogan was unforgivable, but probably due to D.avis's poor reputation.  I get the feeling that analysts just don't take our first game seriously.

I am more worried about how well Kessler played.  Fresno's defense is not our defense, fortunately,  but however you analyze it Kessler has adapted well to Sark's up-tempo game.  105 plays?  700 yards?  Ridiculous.  I expect our defense will bring them down to earth--provided Hogan executes well on 3rd downs again and gives our D some rests.

ESPN has been writing for months about what a let-down he was in 2013 - and a good fraction of Stanford fans seem to think the same.
Continuing with his high efficiency/low throwing reps mode isn't going to change any minds.

At any rate, the ESPN guys are looking for stories more than an actual ranking. Wilson is back from injury, Cal finally beat an FBS team, Solomon just won a QB competition ...

Mariotta - played one half. 14-20, 13.4 yds/att  (vs South Dakota)
Hogan - played one half plus one series. 12-16, 12.8 yds/att  (vs UC Davis)
Wilson - played one half. 13-18, 14.7 yds/att    (vs Idaho St)
Kessler - played 3 quarters. 25-37, 10.6 yds/att    (vs Fresno)
Halliday - played whole game. 40-56, 9.5 yds/att    (vs Rutgers)
Solomon - played whole game minus one drive. 25-44, 9.7 yds/att    (vs UNLV)
Goff* - played whole game. 21-34, 8.3 yds/att    (vs Northwestern)
Kelly - played one half. 18-27, 8.8 yds/att    (vs Weber St)
Liufau - played whole game. 24-39, 6.2 yds/att    (vs Colo St)
Mannion - played whole game. 26-45, 7.3 yds/att  (vs Portland St)
Hundley - played whole game. 20-33, 7.3 yds/att    (vs UVa)

Mannion not playing very well surprised me - that was the kind of team he built up brobdingnagian stats against last year.

Hundley being listed as honorable mention in the ESPN article had nothing to do with this particular game.

Lindquist was the only one who was really bad - UW would be in trouble if they didn't have another guy coming off probation next week.

Nobody played a good enough defense to be considered much of a test - even those in close games.

We averaged only 64 plays per game last year, compared to Oregon's 75, Washington/Arizona State/Arizona's 79, and Cal's 87.

It's also easy to assume that Hogan also suffers by the regular comparisons to Luck.

And we were not a good red zone team last year.  That seems strongly correlated to the fact that we had only two strong dimensions in our offense--Gaffney running between the tackles and Hogan throwing deep--and the red zone eliminated our second option.  That made us truly one-dimensional, without tght ends, a competent intermediate passing game, or even a bona fide fade target, we were relatively easy to defend in the red zone.  That should not be the case this year, and a good bet is that the perception of Hogan, and of Stanford's offense. will improve.

He'll play Utah this year again. I suppose he might leave early, but he'll play 'Zona as a senior next year as ASU and Utah rotate off the schedule.
