While I agree running a post pattern can be effective, I have often wondered which type of wood makes the best posts. Fence posts specifically. Any suggestions?

Hedge (or Osage orange) but you have to drive the nails in before the wood seasons or it's like driving a nail into iron. The posts last forever, though.

Thanks, that was what I was looking for. For the nails, stainless or brass? And what for the stringers?

You mean maybe the fence should be pinned instead of nailed?

I guess so. My first thought was to bind the rails to the posts with sinew and let the sun dry and harden them, but I am not sure that will last forever, as will the posts. So, go for the quick fix or forever? Need help fast as I am not getting any younger and my grandchildren are already talking about the day they can sell the land to Walmart.
