Exactly what qualifies her to be the NFL's leader?  I don't dispute that she is smart and exudes class, but what kind of entertainment business acumen does she possess?  Government and academia are not the proving grounds one would prefer to lead an entertainment business empire.

As an aside, exactly how is the NFL really hurting, like really?  Yes, it isn't ideal to have the players in the headlines for doing bad things, but where is the  serious damage?  Sure the media is riled up, and maybe some people who aren't NFL fans, but where is the evidence any of the recent headlines are shrinking the NFL fan base and slowing its money printing factories?

The Landis analog is good, however the NFL isn't MLB in the 1920s.  It's a gigantic entertainment empire on an international scale.  Though it is true someone could hire others who have experience in the marketing and business realms, as a commissioner without such expertise, it still seems highly unlikely.

NFL owners would have to see their franchises hurting badly before resorting to hiring someone with Condi's profile as their leader.  Even as "bad" as things are for the league now, it is a long way from being weakened to any meaningful degree following its current leaders and well-developed instincts.

The NFL has saturated the US male audience and has made a concerted push to bring in female viewers.  Think of how many women in your life are casual fans and viewers now compared to 10 years ago?  How many advertisers are now targeting their NFL ads toward a mixed viewing base?

Make no mistake - The Rice incident and others like it have hurt the NFL.  Mrs Lefty came home seething on Thursday after someone at work showed her the Rice video and immediately turned off the game while growling about steroids and what is WRONG with these men?

This is just the sort of thing marketing/PR departments obsess about - the nexus of crisis response, demographics expansion and brand image.  Someone may write a book on this in three years (ala the Tylenol poisoning scare in the 80s.)

I'm boycotting the NFL until I see a significant change in policy and direction with regard to domestic violence by its players.  And if the NFL did have the video before last Monday, then Goodell has to go.
