One iffy holding penalty from the ogre position(David Bright) was a significant improvement compared to last week.
The mental errors the OL had against USC were primarily in the 1st quarter and were not glaring blocking errors save the very last sack.
1st Qtr errors:
On our first drive, we reached the USC 21 yard line. The last two consecutive penalties pushed us back to the USC 44. We did rush up to the 12 yard line two plays later to attempt a FG from 49 yards out that was partially blocked by a DL's thumb.
Penalty - False Start (OG Johnny Caspers) at the Stanford 31
Penalty - Holding (OT Andrus Peat) at the USC 20
Penalty - Tripping (OF Johnny Caspers) as the USC 30
49 yard field goal blocked on a 4th down and 20
Our second drive reached the USC 13 yard line that resulted in a punt due to a bad snap. This was our worst drive given we netted only 9 yards of field position with a punt from the USC 29 that was a touchback.
Penalty - False Start (WR Devon Cajuste) at the USC 37
Wild Cat bad snap at the USC 13 - loss of 16 yards
Punt - Net 9 yards on 4th down and 22 (could have been a 46 yard field goal attempt)
2nd Qtr errors:
We drove down to the USC 7 with 19 seconds left on the clock. The following two penalties pushed us back to the USC 16. A dangerous pass to the Cajuste was tipped Cravens almost resulting in a turnover.
Penalty - Illegal Formation (coming out of a timeout!) at the USC 7 (on 3rd and 1)
Penalty - Delay of Game (QB Kevin Hogan) at the USC 11
33 yard field goal good on 4th and 10 to finish the half.
3rd Qtr errors:
One error in this quarter. Mostly just failed to convert drives into points.
26 yard field goal missed on 4th and 3 from USC 9
Turnover on downs at the USC 3 on 4th and 1 - Daniel Marx is stuffed for no gain
Fumble (QB Kevin Hogan) at the USC 32
4th Qtr errors:
A touchdown play was reversed due to a controversial blocking penalty. This pushed us back to the USC 38 and we ended punting from the USC 38 (55 yard field goal attempt probably too long). USC proceeds to kick a 53 yard FG on the ensuing drive.
Penalty - Illegal Block (Reymound Wright) at the USC 23 - TD pass negated
Final drive ends with two sacks. The last sack was a blocking assignment error which lead to a lost fumble on 3rd down and 6 at the USC 25.
