Yes, with more than 1/3 of the season over, I think the coaching staff needs to take a hard look at game planning, play calling, etc. Our offense, despite the talent we have, is impotent.

Lyons completely blew the coverage on 4th down. We were playing Cover 3. The cornerback has responsibility for the deep third and the linebacker takes the flat. Instead Lyons somehow took the flat. What a fail.

Why do we go to a prevent defense when we have stopped them all day? They had three minutes. Why not just play our usual defense and stuff them?Even with that we had them down to one play and lose on a blown coverage. Now we'll get to hear Hotes drone on about the Wonderfulness of Notre Dame.Â

JPRI, you misinterpreted my post. I was not complaining about officiating; it is a widespread opinion that Pac 12 officiating is less than stellar. I stated that officiating, at whatever level, is part of the game and beyond any team's control. We need to control the parts of the game that we can, and the kicking game is one element under our control. Williamson helped lose the game with his bad kick. Lyons helped lose the game with his bad coverage/penalties. Overall, it doesn't really matter because, while we may have a playoff-caliber defense, our offense is impotent. We are in desperate need of some retooling.

Wait until the next time we lose a game. I hope it's later rather than sooner, but I guarantee there will be a thread bi**ching about the officiating. We lost this game because the offense couldn't get much done, and when they finally did, the defense couldn't hold the fort. End of story.

Wait until the next time we lose a game. I hope it's later rather than sooner, but I guarantee there will be a thread bi**ching about the officiating. We lost this game because the offense couldn't get much done, and when they finally did, the defense couldn't hold the fort. End of story.

There will always be complaining about refs. Most of the time, I will not join in. I even pointed out a call against Stanford that I thought the refs missed. I don't think the refs consciously set out to cheat for one team. However, with ND there is a consistent trend. I see the same thing when ND plays other teams.
That said, I think Stanford lost this game. The only reason the game was close enough for the refs to matter was because of some flubbed kicks probably caused by the weather. Both offenses looked horrible. ND's O was playing our D. Our O has no excuse.

I agree with 82 Card. During their run to the national title game, they got pivotal calls against BYU and Pitt, not to mention us.Â
I don't know how that replay call in particular is justifiable. Pellets jump off the field. His left hand does not come up under the ball, the ball bounces up to the chest, and the left hand is off to the side grabbing at air. Even the homer announcer Mayock said, "I would say that is clear and conclusive evidence ... that's not even close." And he is shocked when the call on the field is upheld. The worst part is that it costs us a timeout, which might have been useful at the end of the game.
Hogan's 2nd interception was a clear PI, when the DB runs into Montgomery before the ball arrives, and even that catch is not clean. But again, it is upheld.
I'm going to have a hard time figuring out who I want to lose more when they play FSU.Â

Just remember. We were out gained almost 2:1. The refs weren't why we lost this.

You are correct, we were our own worst enemy. We were lucky to be in it. But it's pretty clear also that the refs did us no favors today.

Well, the commentators were saying Stanford was playing soft, playing back, not pressuring Golson. It seems to me that giving him time to throw (at least on most plays) was our undoing. I would've rushed five guys.

I mean, that's nice, but we were doing that approach the entire game. This wasn't a new idea they dreamed up; it was the same ideas we were trying out the whole game.

Sometimes we rushed three but we often brought 4 or 5 as well. This was the perfect time to bring 5, when they NEED to make a longish throw.
