This photo in the linked article posted by ferrari. Do volleyball players carry some red badge of courage in their hands and and finger joints as they leave the sport and get on with life? We read about ankle, knee and hip injuries, but maybe tweaked fingers and hand joints are just routine and accepted as a cost. It would seem that women might be more vulnerable, but that might not be so. I'm typing this with various misshapen finger joints and generic arthritic stuff from a life not paying attention until too late, but deliberately putting your hand in front of a full-speed spike seems like a recipe for injury or insult that shows up later. (and, yeah, that pic looks like a serve rather than a spike, but players try to block those, too.)
