The demonstration of the Oculus Rift that Stanford's apparently giving their quarterbacks. Virtual reality seems like a very promising way to teach players -- especially QBs. Hopefully we're thinking through all the different novel technologies that could help us (e.g. wearables, genomics, statistical analysis, the tech insights political campaigns have gained for recruiting, etc.). Seems like we should have a natural edge here.

[Interviewer]: I learned from Cody Karutz during my lab tour that the Stanford Football team has been using your lab’s technology to watch 360-degree replays. What advantage do you think they will have over other teams and do you think this advantage will become controversial?

[Stanford Professor]: So, the Stanford football team and I have produced a series of videos that shows anybody who puts on the helmet the perspective of running a play from the quarterback position. All we have done is produced that video and we have not even shown it to Coach Shaw yet. All other applications of it will be up to Coach Shaw once we get the pleasure of showing it to him. So, we are not actually doing anything with it yet.

Actually, I didn't think that was cool at all. Seriously. That kind of technological edge should be kept behind locked doors away from prying eyes. The advantage that system gives the quarterbacks must be enormous. Thanks to last night's broadcast, I'm sure Phil Knight has already ordered one from Amazon.

It's good for recruiting/branding and we should have an edge on the programming talent necessary to make it a usable product.

Keeping with the spirit of the title of this thread, but departing from the technological aspect I think it was very cool that Dave Fleming was one of the commentators.  I really like him and would like to see him continue to thrive.

I think Fleming will be able to write his own ticket; he is that good.  He also looks like he is about 20 years old, so he could market that magic potion too, if broadcasting doesn't work out.  Color was by Greg McElroy, the fairly recent Alabama QB.  I thought he was very good too, beyond your team is kicking butt so everything on a telecast sounds good.  He has a future.  Did his homework and was insightful without being intrusive.  Even had a Spider 2 Y Banana moment.  Diagrammed one of Stanford's touchdowns like he'd run it a thousand times himself. (Can't remember the name - naked something or another.) Knew what the outside receiver needed to do to free up the middle, perfect throw, TD.  Fleming got a kick out of it.  McElroy looks like he is 19. Turns out he is 26.

Really thought about driving the 10 minutes from the office to watch the game live all by myself. (Son is in Tahoe; wife and daughter are completely preoccupied by Jacketrette's upcoming wedding.*)  One step off the curb quickly disabused me of that notion. I was going to be that guy in a suit at a football game, but not in some thin wool pants in that weather.

It was the 49ers foghorn they blow when the 49ers score a touchdown.  I did like it but I still wish Axe Comm brought the train whistle though.

I found the piped in sound effects annoying, from the foghorn (I mean, they played it when either team scored), to the piped in music, to the stupid Foster Farms commercials.  But what really annoyed me was the sound effects they played leading up to the kickoffs.  Sort of like some electronic distorted quasi jet engine taking off, mostly it was just annoying.  Once Williamson kicked off before they could start playing the sound effect, and they started with the ball in mid-air.
