Some of the commenters seem rather reasonable. Others, not so much. I hope I remember how to behave should the tables ever be turned...

Question... if Wayne Lyons had gone to Kal instead Michigan would we have had the same reaction? There were some negative things said about him going to Michigan, but no where near the vitriol.  Then again, Michigan is not a rival like the bears are.

Why do they (the 59ers) think he was accepted to the Stanford GSB? I believe actual work experience is required for admission. A MS&E masters program which is only one year seems much more likely. I suppose we will all know which path was taken soon.
If I had a dollar every time I was distracted, I wish I had some ice cream.

Has it been reported by a reputable source that Scarlett will be at the GSB?

I was going to point out the same thing. I think it stems from two things... at Berkeley, he was in the Haas Business school and received or is receiving a degree in business administration, so the logical conclusion is that he will get an MBA. Secondly, Bear fans don't really know much about our degree programs; I'd be surprised if many know about MS&E. Plus they can pretend that the GSB is majorly bending admission requirements to take him (which they would be doing if he came in without work experience).
BTW, if he did want to get an MBA, he would be doing himself a disservice getting the degree without first having worked (regardless of where he got the degree)

Is it still a grad transfer requirement that the new school offer a degree that the old school does not? (see Wayne Lyons discussion). If so, since both Stanford and Cal offer MBAs, Brennan Scarlett is coming to Stanford to pursue another degree.Â

As far as I can tell from reading the NCAA Manual (effective August 2014) linked by 82lsju in the other Scarlett thread, there is no mention in graduate student transfer rule of enrolling in a program or for a degree not offered by the Bachelor's degree institution.

Of course, that doesn't mean Scarlett is in the GSB and I haven't seen mention of that outside of message boards.

This is interesting. It looks like there's a default release if the school doesn't reply to a student athlete's request.

There's a lot of stuff flying around that's either false or not proven true:
1. Player must pursue a major not offered by the original school (false).
2. B. Scarlett applied to Haas (unproven).
3. B. Scarlett was rejected by Haas (unproven).
4. B. Scarlett was accepted into GSB (unproven).

I'm speculating, but it seems possible that Coach Yikes might have been asked by Scarlett (or Haas) whether or not The Low APR 59ers football team would foot the bil for his 1st year (i.e. continue his athletic scholarship) and Yikes said no. Which brings me to the question:
Will Scarlett (no pun intended vis a vis the Robin Hood reference....) be getting a free ride from Stanford for the first year of his Grad program (whether it be at GSB, MS&E or the Department of Horticulture, or whatever....)? Somehow, that seems unseemly, at least to me.

I've been very skeptical of the GSB issue as well. I really doubt the GSB leadership would let a place in their class be co-opted by the football program. And though many mock the amount of work to complete a degree at the GSB, the time commitment is not insubstantial.
I hope he gets his body right and contributes. It would be awesome for him to play a key role in retaining the Axe and going to the Rose Bowl. Can you imagine the exploding heads at UCB if he makes a game saving tackle that secures a BG victory and a spot in the Pac12 championship?

Just curious as to why you would find that unseemly, assuming Shaw wants him on the football team. After all we did offer him a four year ride out of high school. Also, he will be getting the same benefits players who will have graduated from Stanford and are still on the team (like Hogan) are getting.

Depth at a very thin position. Don't see him being a starter unless he is materially better than the others in fall practice, mainly because he's in his fifth year compared to others who have more years of eligibility left and therefore have more upside for the program.

Scarlett should have a good shot, and perhaps the inside line, on the DE spot opposite Shittu.
In the worst case, he backs up Thomas and Shittu and is in for short yardage and goal line.
He's not an option at nose tackle under any reasonable circumstances.
And if he can stay healthy, he's a godsend. Against no-huddle teams particularly, we need at least five good defensive linemen. Scarlettt gives us a credible fourth guy, after Shittu, Thomas, and Phillips, with hopes for a fourth coming from Wesley Annan or Luke Kaumatule, or a position switch from the offense, where Greg Taboada, a very good hs DE with a big frame, would be my hope and pick.

I find it unseemly that there is even a whiff of collusion between the Athletic Department and the GSB which seems to allow the latter to be admitted to the GSB on a free ride in the place of some other possibly more talented (GSB-wise) applicant than Mr. Scarlett.

I haven't really thought about the issue much specifically w.r.t. the GSB. So to help me out ...
Why is it unseemly for the GSB to collude with the Athletic Department to let in a student-athlete with financial aid but not so unseemly for Stanford undergrad, or other Stanford grad programs, to do so?
