I don't remember any mention of him last Saturday, unfortunately. Maybe that's an indication that he's come to a definite decision to transfer somewhere. I believe Harrell got a mention. So it's just Marx and Harrell, and who else, at fullback? More tight ends in the backfield maybe too.

Wow, did not see that coming.  It means Marx would be the only fullback on the roster.  Fanaika may see some time there, as I think I read he has played there in a goal line package this spring.

Good.  Not that I am glad to see Skov leave, but to me, Stanford's offense is going to be much more prolific if it uses TEs in lieu of FBs. Move to a base Ace formation given all the TE depth and make heavy use of 2 and 3 TE formations.  Having more TEs on the field in jumbo sets will create more of a passing threat out of them.

Hard to argue about Skov's running limitations, but he was a pretty good hammer as a lead blocker.  We won't be able to run McCaffrey out on the edges all the time.  We'll have to run him inside, too and he'll need the best lead blocker we've got.  Maybe Marx is that guy but there was a reason that Skov was getting the playing time.  As a runner, I think Marx is better than Skov, but with our discombobulated play calling and execution, who knows whether Marx would have been better last year?

I had the same reaction.  I suspect he either saw the writing on the wall that he was going to lose playing time to Marx or he wants a chance to play in GT's triple option -- a rare offense in modern college football that allows a FB to play a role beyond just blocking and obvious short-yardage situations.

I agree.  It's just possible he realizes the NFL isn't a reasonable option and wants to leverage his football skills into as much education as possible.  Isn't that one of the things we preach to recruits?

That assumes he was offered a fifth year, and that Stanford offers the particular type of grad Ed he wants and that, if so, he could be accepted into it.  Without knowing the answer to those questions I can't question his decision.  I think it's highly unlikely he is transferring to enhance his NFL chances, particularly having watched his brother's attempt.

I'm afraid I missed the comments by Lyons to which you are referring, but if he was truly having difficulty fitting into the style of coverage that Stanford utilized, then this may just be a case of a misfit between a player and a system.  But given Stanford's overall defensive success over the past few years, including (until last season) noteworthy success at shutting down one of the most prolific offenses in the nation, Oregon, with their particular style, I think the onus is on the player to adjust. 
Of course, it is always possible that Lyons just never quite lived up to the expectations that came with his recruitment.  Sometimes it is easier to blame the system.

Regardless, I wish him (and Skov, if he should decide to transfer) well in his new school.  These young men represented Stanford well, played hard, didn't create any embarrassing headlines with off field behavior, and seem to have taken advantage of their opportunity for a great education.  Hats off to them!
