I think the target audience for this is the students and recruits, for which "the brand" has at most a four year history (well, I guess for students it might have a seven year history). So for this group, it makes sense to go for a more edgy, trendy brand, and eschew tradition. Kind of the reason we occasionally bring out the black uniforms, even though black is not a Stanford color. The players like it.
