This just seems like a mistake to me. Forget about the football, if he comes back next year and is healthy his draft stock goes WAY up.

The fact that Arizona drafted him may have played in his decision.

Good luck to Zach. He wasn't there for Spring Ball and we looked good w/out him. Yes we will miss him. Yes we could obviously use him but we will be just fine.The athletes we have will be great especially after some time under their belt.
People question his decision? I would 100% do same thing. His scholarship to finish school is here whenever he wants it-he doesn't lose it. He had several injuries last year that could end his career. He also has to worry about getting a third concussion in a year (2 last year). He likes and has a brighter future in baseball than football and has the talent. Why jeopardize it with getting hurt, then missing football and possibly baseball? One massive pulling guard chopblock and his dream is done. Then he would have no athletic options. He was quoted as liking baseball more than football. With his talent, I take the money and the chance of paying pro baseball ---just my opinion.

Thanks, Stanfordindians1, for the insight. When I saw what round he was drafted in, I thought the money wouldn't be enough, but I guess it wasn't only about the money for him...

If we truly want the best for all the young men and women who enter under an athletic scholarship, we should wish him well and realize that, while there will for the youngsters, we will be ok. And if Zach is successful in MLB, that will also be good for Stanford

JJJ, you are exactly right. We think that the Stanford experience is compelling and should be enough to keep most non-elite players like Hoffpauir in school until they complete their eligibility. Most fans (me included) were probably scratching their heads when Thomas Keiser declared early for the draft. I had a similar reaction a few years later when Terrence Brown left early.Â
These young men weighed another year of the Stanford experience against the opportunity to play professionally and opted to go pro. I think they were ready to get on with the rest of their lives. Best of luck to Zach. I'll always remember the stop he made on the ASU RB on 4th and goal in the Pac 12 championship game.

I was a little surprised that they didn't return for fifth years, but they didn't really leave early. Hoffpauir is leaving early, after three years, most likely without a degree. I hope he comes back and graduates, as some other three-year departures have done -- Whitfield, Harris, Hutchinson, Borchard, Gaffney, etc.

Don't get me wrong. I wish him well but I think he's making a big mistake. Even if he focuses exclusively on baseball next year, he would benefit from being healthy and playing a full season.
The football team will miss him, but they will move forward without him. Very deep bench for DBs.

Assuming that he didn't want to play football next year because of a brighter baseball future and the fear of more concussions, he may have signed with Arizona because of the need to pay for school next year. If he was no longer playing football, then he may lose his football scholarship and the baseball team would not be able to give him a full scholarship and may be only able to give him a very small partial scholarship.
Thus, he may have made a fiscal decision to forego another year of college because of the cost

But for some of these athletes, the opportunity to work full time at their passion -- baseball, in Hoffpauir's case -- is probably just too good to pass up. There are far too many unknown variables surrounding the baseball draft. He may have dropped as low as he did because he had the football option (and another year of baseball), and teams feared he'd be a wasted pick. Maybe Arizona offered him a deal that far surpassed what would've been expected for his draft position. Who knows? One thing we do know -- this is what he wanted to do. I wish him luck.

Whitfield and Lloyd are primed to start. I am not that concerned about Hoffpauir leaving. Carter and Richards are massive losses in the secondary. Lyons, Olugbude and Hoffpauir are all pretty average to below average Pac 12 starters and the young highly touted DBs who will be under their second year with Akina should be playing at an equal or higher level for us in 2015 than we got out of Lyons, Olugbude and Hoffpauir in 2014. Hoffpauir was a good tackler and made some plays but he got exploited by some speedy receivers in bad mismatches. Carter was a great cover corner who could tackle. He didn't get the picks and you didn't hear his name a lot but that was usually due to his man not being open. Big, big loss.

Back in 2011 Delano Howell was strong safety and Michael Thomas free safety (unless I remember incorrectly). At one point Howell was out with an injury and Jordan Richards, then a true freshman, filled in. But again if I remember right, Thomas moved to strong safety and Richards played free safety. Is that right? And if so, does it give any clues as to which positions Lloyd and Whitfield will play (assuming they're in the lead for starting roles)?

Hoffpauir was a strong safety his first two years before playing free safety last year. I think it's pretty flexible. Whitfield would probably be fine playing free safety in any case.
