Mao birdies 7 and 8. Lee is still 1 up going to the 9th hole (the 18th of the match).
Stanford fans may remember that Mariah Stackhouse was 2 down with 2 to play vs. Baylor in the 2015 championship match and went birdie-birdie to take the match to extra holes where she won on the 19th.

Even though she was playing against Stanford, I was really hard *not* to root for Janet Mao, the Northwestern player who was so hot down the stretch. A neuroscience major who presumably had Stanfordesque credentials coming out of HS, we certainly wish her well going forward. Great match!

Arizona is a tough match up for Stanford. In fact, any opponent is tough for Stanford. Unless Liu and Wang can raise their games above where they have played this week, the only path to a victory is for Aubert, Valenzuela and Lee all to win. A tall order.
Going by national rankings, Moore is Arizona's highest rated player at 28th nationally. Hou is 37th and Pagdanganan is 42nd. Stoll is 109th and Nordaas is not ranked.
But don't assume that a lower ranking indicates a weaker player. Arizona beat UCLA because Stoll went out in the first match and knocked off the #2 player in the country, Lilia Vu. All of these players have been champions in junior golf. They all know how to win.
And don't forget that Arizona was comfortably in 3rd place before their near-epic collapse in yesterday's 4th round. They are a formidable opponent. But it's the national semifinal - what else do you expect? :-)

Much, much, much prefer #10 Arizona to #0.5 UCLA. As badly as we are playing at the bottom of our order, Arizona's #5 has played even worse. And their #1 player, Hayley Moore, shot 78-76-72-77 in stroke play.
Based on the scores in this tournament, we could play them straight up, best scorer to worst in order on each team, and win 4-1.
If just one of Liu/Wang can play to form--Wang was the best player on the team for the last month of the season--this could be an better match for us than today's. Maybe Liu can finally shake the flu.

Great! As much as I hate rooting for the Toejams, unless I'm missing something, wouldn't Bama be a really really hard matchplay win for us? Three of their players finished in the top 7 and their four and five players both finished better than ours. $C seems more evenly spread and more plausible we could get three wins from their top four players. Is it worth making the rare exception to root for the Spoiled Children?
