They were getting beat pretty bad until the Utah QB became a turnover machine. If Utah had "turtled" a bit more efficiently, especially in that weather, Northwestern loses. Northwestern's defense took advantage of some really bad play by Utah to win the game. Absent that horrible play by Utah, it is a different story

One difference though is that we were not ahead 17-3. We were behind, so taking more chances was perhaps reasonable. Utah blew up while ahead by a significant margin, which is much worse.
