I guess we really do live in a world of participation trophies. I can't believe they give out trophies to 8 places. What happened to 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

This is the NCAA championships.  Nothing wrong with recognizing the top 8.

Then why do the Olympics only award 1st,2nd and 3rd. I think the NCAA championships are only a stepping stone to the Olympics or turning pro. Maybe we should give every swimmer who is within one second of the wining time a 1st place trophy and anyone who is within 2 seconds a 2nd place trophy and within in 3 seconds a 3rd. place trophy. And everyone else gets a participation trophy.

that's true for very few, if any, swimmers who finish 4-8 in their event. I have no problem with giving a (smaller) trophy to student-athletes who end up among the 8 best in the nation, for whom this is the culmination of a long career in swimming. This is not akin to giving ribbons to kids who participated in the race around the elementary school yard at recess.

Olympic swimming, is for all intents and purposes, an individual sport (relays excepted). Swimming in the US, from the NCAA level down to rec leagues is both a team sport and an individual sport. Traditionally, all the swimmers in the finals or top heat earn points for their team.
