Village Cheese House closes

A sad day. But just not the same with the newest owners
But I’ll try the nearby Tapa restaurant soon

Back in the day, the double decker pastrami and swiss on dark rye was a 'must stop' on the way to the stadium. The original owners lacked any customer service genes, but they sure made a great sandwich.

Yes, original owners double decker roast beef and jack cheese on rye, were favorites of mine as well. Would drive from work in Mtn View
to get one at leat once a week. Also, before Football games. Ah, the good old days.

With the Oasis, Hobees Stanford, Prolific Oven, Village Cheese House and (longer ago) the New Varsity, Chef Wangs, Printers Inc and Ming’s closed many of the PA off-campus connections from my college days have disappeared.
Thank God the Dutch Goose is alive and kicking! I grabbed a burger and pitcher with a friend there last week.
Still just as delicious.
Happy New Year to all.

Max's Opera Cafe, my flavorite for years. Su Hong. Calafia. Janta. Palo Alto Baking Company. Used to love Opa! in both Willow Glen and PA, along with Mio Vicino. Just fond memories now.

Is the Heidelberg Beer Garten still around? How about Kirks?
I can name a couple hundred great City spots that are long gone from my youth. The It’s It stand at the beach, the Splendid in N Beach, Hot House, Epplers, Chu Lin, Yada, Yada...

I went on a sunny day in November and it was crowded and excellent, but upscale compared to before. review

The gravel area with picnic tables just wasn't revenue dense enough. The counter is next door, maybe took a few feet of Kirk's space. I don't consider this an upgrade. Kirk's building had to go, but the new ones aren't remarkable.

Zareen's is good Indian food and very popular, with outdoor eating tables shared with the Counter and Starbucks. Zareen's is my daughter's favorite restaurant (Village Cheese House was #2, but no more). But we still go to Kirk's in T&C and not the Counter.
Lots of good spots in PA have closed and been replaced by upscale, trendy spots that are lacking soul. Zott’s, the Goose and the Palo Alto Creamery still carry the flag for the old days.
Mick, I’m sure you know but just in case ...
The original Mio Vicino in Santa Clara is still open and still good.
Opa! has several Bay Area branches including thriving spots in Campbell and Los Gatos. I like ‘em both but ... crowded.

Does anyone remember University Creamery? NOT Peninsula Creamery near where Blockbuster was. University Creamery was on University Ave. and had these bittersweet chocolate milkshakes of which I have, despite many attempts, not found the equal. I believe it closed in 1990 or ‘91.

I remember it as a bit of a greasy spoon. Maybe I judged it too quickly.
I heard the place was owned by the proprietor of the nearby Chinese restaurant officially named "Hsi-Nan, the Little" but called "Louie's". I don't recall Louie's full name, if I ever knew it. That restaurant was a big favorite, with some dishes I've never seen elsewhere.

Oh, it was totally a greasy spoon. But good. And cheap.
I *think* I remember Louie's. Here is an article I found about it...

Definitely aware of it. I first went to Mio Vicino in Campbell, then they opened in Willow Glen. Both had brobdingnagian followings, the owners rammed through big price increases and the crowds dropped off. Really too bad because Willow Glen has every kind of restaurant except pasta/Italian (I don't count Willow Street Pizza, which has gone downhill so fast, it's as if a rocket is attached to it).
When we lived in Palo Alto, Mrs. Mick and I went to the University Creamery and Peninsula Creamery and Max's Opera Cafe regularly. Really enjoyed all three places. Very bummed that they're gone.
Lastly, there was a gourmet burger place in W. G. called A. J.'s, closed about eight months ago. World-class burgers. Pay the same as at Shake Shack, a pale imitation if there ever was one.

Cool article. I remember being at a special Chinese meal that Louie cooked for us at a non-Chinese restaurant he owned in the Marsh Manor shopping center. Maybe that's the one this article is about. Mark Manasse was a co-worker of mine at DEC Systems Research Center in Palo Alto, part of the group there that usually ate at Louie's a couple of times a week when it was still open.

What, am I the only one old enough on here to remember the YumYum list (maintained by Les Ernest on SAIL circa 1973)? Louie's was well known to me (in Texas at the time) in the mid 70s because of that, but not my style of food. That list was why I went to Kirk's when I first came to Silicon Valley in 79.
During the 80s and 90s, I used to eat the roast beef sandwich at the Cheese House most weekday lunches. (That was an industrious family that ran it, led by a really sweet grandmother. You always got the biggest sandwiches when she did your order. I hope they are doing well.) After 2007, it was still ok but not wonderful enough to make the trip. It has been quite a while since I was there, but I am really sorry to see it go though.
Following the demise of the original Applewood Pizza in Menlo Park 1983-2018, the original Round Table Pizza location closed in Menlo Park in 2019 after 60 years. (Regarding Su Hongs, the Menlo Park restaurant location closed some time back (and gone through several restaurants since then); the to-go location behind it changed hands a couple of years ago; the spin-off restaurant in Palo Alto closed a couple of months ago and is now open again under a different name.)

I remember the Yum Yum list vaguely now that you mention it. It was still around (as was Les) when I started in the Stanford CS PhD program in 1981.
