Remember that we're also missing several starters from last season (Carrington, Dodson, and Lacie Hull), another starter is still working her way back into shape to play 40 minutes (Fingall), and all four of our frosh have been heavily featured tonight, along with the player who is probably 14th in our depth chart (Moschkau). Given all that, I'm pretty contented with what I'm seeing. Yeah, we're not going to beat Oregon with this kind of performance, but thankfully we have a few weeks before we need to, and over a month before we get them at home.

Yeah, Oregon is making mincemeat of previously undefeated Colorado (71-30 in the third quarter). They're on pace to win >100 to <50.
BC
If you are looking at other rivals, UCLA is up 60-56 on ASU, and Arizona is up 54-59 on USC.
BC
By the way, nice to see Kiana with a nice line: 12 points on 5/8 shooting (2/2 from the FT line). Hoping that this marks the end of her slump.
BC
77-58 is the final, after WSU scored 8 points in the last minute. I would have felt better about 77-50, but still, I will take a 19 point win where we led wire to wire.

It was good enough for today. Hopefully they will continue to get better, so that in mid-March they are in top form.

My write-up done at the top. Not our proudest defense on Hristova and Molina, but it sure was good to see our offense clicking better and Fingall and Williams getting going.
My recollection is that Nadia was injured in the USC game. That was the game when a husky USC post player kept intentionally undercutting her. It was the game that Nadia got knocked down a few times and didn’t get up after the last jolt to the knees.
It has been fun watching Nadia play so effectively this season though, and especially, seeing her enjoy the game so much!
On another front, Maya has not been court-side for the last two games. She seemed bummed sitting on the bench early in the season, and who wouldn’t be!. It would be a shame if she didn’t play this year.

I thought our defense was pretty good. The score was 77-50 with 1:19 seconds left in the game. Molina scored 8 points in the last 1:19 with the likes of Jump and Moschkau guarding her. I don't think those last 1:19 seconds with the game already out of hand are representative of our overall defensive effort.

Nadia was injured in the Pac-12 conference opener January 4, 2019, almost exactly a year ago. That must be what Tara meant by "this game last year." You're right that the opponent was USC.

Good point on Molina making a bunch of points in garbage time. I guess you could say we slightly controlled her earlier in the game--holding her to 19.
It was an interesting defense. About midway through the 3rd quarter (when the lead was well in hand) I noticed that other than Hristova and Molina, not a single other WSU player had scored a single point--not even a free throw. Those two were 100% of the WSU offense. Others got some points late.
And yet we had players working hard against Hristova and Molina. Williams in the first half and Wilson in the second in particular tried to contain Molina, even though she got open for 5/8 three point shooting.
WSU uses Princeton-like elements but does more with screens than we do, so we needed to do a lot of switching. When Molina would dribble across the top of the arc, trying to lose Williams as she passed by 1 or 2 screening players, we would switch. It make the perimeter defense look almost like a zone at times. Often the switching seemed successful, although there were mismatches created from time to time. I thought if was pretty clear we were well prepared for this level of switching which I had not seen us do so much this year.

It was almost a reverse scouting report defense. We let their top two players score all but ten of their points, and shut down everyone else. I think only four players scored any sort of point, and the top two accounted for 49/59 points.

In contrast, our leading scorer for the season, Lexie, only scored 3 points. If that happened in a game last year (Alanna only scoring 3 points) we are probably losing said game. Even though our offense has room to grow, I really like our depth and versatility. It makes us much harder to defend vs last year. Last year our opponents knew that we were trying to feed Smith in the post and that she rarely passed the ball back out. So they would try and get a steal on the entry pass and if that failed then double or triple team her when she caught the ball. This year it seems like the only player who gets special defensive attention is Jump because they don’t want her going off from 3. Makes things easier for Lexie, Williams, Jones and Fingall to score when they aren’t the focal point of the opponents defense.

I'm with you 100%, BosCard. Although we are still committing way too many turnovers and occasional pass-around-without-ever-shooting possessions, on the whole, we are more versatile, and Tara has more possible permutations, than I can ever remember. All four of our frosh are averaging >10 minutes per game, and I doubt Tara has ever played so many frosh so extensively. Given how many permutations are on court in any given game, more turnovers are inevitable, because each set of players has had less time to practice passing to each other and internalizing each other's moves/habits/"tells".
Moreover, we're doing all of this while replacing over 2.5 starters' worth of playing minutes lost to injury (Carrington and Dodson) or graduation (Smith and Coffee). It's inevitable that we will have some sloppy play on offense or some defensive miscues. Without Carrington, I definitely don't see us beating Oregon. But in the long term, I haven't felt this excited about the upside potential of a Stanford WCBB since the days of the Wiggins/Appel era.

Cartington is close to practicing. From a coach so guessing she may practice this coming week
With a couple of Haley's turnovers, it seems like there were miscommunications with her passes. One was a pass I think to Fingall for what Haley thought was an attempted backdoor cut that ended up in a WSU defender's hands and the other one was when Jones grabbed a rebound and tried passing it up court to Anna, but it looked like Wilson had her back turned when the pass was thrown. Hopefully, with more experience playing together and on the collegiate level for Haley, those types of mistakes will lessen.
Haley's versatility is her greatest strength right now. As 81alum pointed out, she fills up a stats sheet pretty easily as she can rebound and she can dish out assists and she can proven she can score. If she can increase her dependability as a scorer, then she can make the leap to potentially getting national recognition. She might not be a triple-double machine like Ionescu, but an average stat line of double digit points with mid to high single digit rebounds and assists is not out of the question in her collegiate career.
At this point, I've given up on the hope that Dodson will be able to play at all this season. Given that she's been in street clothes and no indication that she is progressing towards getting back to playing, I'll be very surprised if we see her in action at all She might take a red-shirt, but then they would claim one of the scholarships in the 2021-22 season and take away a slot from one of the Class of 2021 prospects we have.
With Carrington, the first Oregon series starts less than two weeks from now and if she's just starting to practice this week, I am not sure how much of an impact she can make with the rustiness she'll likely have, having only played in the first couple games. The Oregon schools will definitely be a gauntlet and we'll need to definitely keep up with them point-wise, which we weren't able to do with the Ducks' visit to Maples last season.
Don't overlook Oregon State either. The Beavers are a much more dangerous team than last year in my opinion. Last year, they were heavily reliant on the three because they really didn't have a reliable inside game and you can see when they struggled in the Pac-12 tournament (the loss to UW) and the close wins in the first couple rounds of the NCAA tournament and the blowout loss to Louisville that their 3-point shooting percentage were pretty low. However, this year, they have freshmen Kennedy Brown and Taylor Jones (who is their 3rd leading scorer) who provide an interior presence to worry about, so you can't just focus on the perimeter. And they still have Pivec, Goodman, Tudor and Slocum who are all shooting at least 34% from long range.
We have plenty of weapons too. I believe we are better equipped to deal with the Oregon schools as we are not overly reliant on just one player (Alanna) last year. We can score from multiple positions on the floor as well, especially in a more offensively minded lineup. But we have to make sure to limit offensive rebounds (you cannot let as good of teams like the Ducks and Beavers to have multiple chances at the basket within one possession -- they will score no matter how good your defense is), limit turnovers and just be less streaky in scoring. I don't think we can afford to give half a quarter without scoring in those games.
