And here we go again....can Tara figure out a way to beat Oregon once this year?  Our last game against Oregon we showed major improvement over the first.  Can we keep that trend going?  Oregon certainly showed no weakness in dispatching Arizona tonight.  Our defense looked about as good as it has all year in holding UCLA to 20 pts under its average.  The unmovable object meets the unstoppable force.

Even the best of defenses--like Arizona's--can't hold Oregon's offense down too much--they just have too many scorers.  Our offense will have to play nearly the best game of the year.  But Oregon's matchup zone defense is much improved over a year ago, and it has been their surprisingly effective defense that has given us trouble.  

Perhaps Dodson's growing effectiveness can help us keep Sabally from going off on us, and we can keep Hebard and Ionescu down to their production last time.  Then we need major offensive production from Lexie and Williams and someone else.  And if the stars align just so.....

Really don't know how we can stop Oregon - like you said, too many scorers. And it is really the vast improvement in their D that has made them so tough. They pressure and play hard on both ends and don't let up. We will just have to play harder, tougher, and faster than them and hope our shots drop and the refs call it fair.

Really don't know how we can stop Oregon - like you said, too many scorers. And it is really the vast improvement in their D that has made them so tough. They pressure and play hard on both ends and don't let up. We will just have to play harder, tougher, and faster than them and hope our shots drop and the refs call it fair.

Here is my theory.  The fans are usually right.  Officiating is so inexact that there are always plenty of really bad calls on both sides.  And it is the job of fans to point out all the bad calls on their team and ignore all the bad calls on the other team.

I would love to see a rapid video review system in basketball for all calls.  Anything could be reviewed.  If the video booth saw an incorrect call, play would be stopped and the refs would have to review the video on courtside monitors.  They could then overrule or confirm the call.  Such a system would not need to use broadcast quality cameras.  Several small static wireless cameras could be placed around the court and fed to the video booth.  No camera operators would be required.  With the right software application, one or two people in the video booth could monitor the action.  The head ref could wear a bluetooth earpiece to communicate with the video booth.

This system could be portable enough to travel with each officiating crew.  Or, each NCAA venue could be required to acquire and install the system at the facility.  It would be important to have hardware and software consistency across all venues.  This way, a failed camera or monitor could be quickly replaced and the video booth operators would only need to know one system.

The person that creates such a hardware and software system and contracts with the NCAA, and perhaps the NBA, could do very well financially.

I remember that game, and it was comical. One of the calls at issue was super minor to begin with and IIRC they stopped play for something like 3-4 minutes to check the call. Not only does it stretch the game for fans, but it kills all momentum for a team in the midst of a run, and it also functions like giving both teams extra timeouts, with alters incentives to push tempo, etc. 

My overarching preference would simply be that refs err on the side of calling 50-50 contact. What drives me crazy with Missy is her over-enforcement of the ticky-tacky rules but then often letting the heavy physical contact go. And many of the other PAC-12 refs let contact go that would qualify as an assault and battery under tort law, some of which leads to injuries, like Fingall's against U$C last year. That, much much more than carrying the ball, is what I want stamped out. A few folks said it earlier this season, but it's almost gotten to where I don't enjoy watching because I'm just worried about who's going to go down next and stay down next.
