Of course Davis leaving brought in Monty and the rest is history.
Monty won 4 league championships. In the 90 or so years before him Stanford won 3.
Well, Davis certainly complained loud and long about Munk. Broadly, it's seemed clear Davis didn't like Stanford admissions. He complained about it constantly, and never really seemed on board with Stanford's own view of how to conduct athletics.
Still, it is pretty hard to know exactly why he left Stanford - even the person themselves can have a hard time sorting out the reasons. When Davis left for Iowa, he received a substantial pay boost. He also took over a loaded team - they started out 18-0 and were ranked #1 that first year under Davis. He was also a midwestern guy, having grown up in Wisconsin. There's lots of reasons.
Monty was in many ways different, but there were still a pile of possible reasons. He was clearly unhappy with admissions at the time - and telling Bobk that admissions was driving him out is no small data point. On the other hand, a basketball coach wanting to try coaching in the NBA is hardly surprising. Stanford certainly wasn't going to be paying him $10 million over 4 years which was the reported contract he signed. And it was local. Hard not to think a variety of reasons led to his taking the Warriors job.
