As an aside, my SO was planning to attend a group exercise class yesterday. It was originally to be outside, but it was raining and moved inside so she didn't go.  I asked why it is going inside and questioned if that was even allowed.  She said she didn't know and it isn't allowed. So I asked if she was going to call and report the guy for violating health ordinances.  She said no. So this fitness trainer guy welcomed I don't know what it was 10 or 15 people inside his studio and didn't let them know it was not allowed. No word yet on if he was punk'ing any elected representative and outing them on social media.

Agreed, except for those who hold themselves out to be arbiters of public health safety, are in a position to encourage others and to castigate those who don't follow that behavior.  And that's Nancy Pelosi.  She hectors constantly on doing the right thing, and that's just fine, someone has to do it.  But if you're going to do it, you'd better be above reproach.  Ask any clergyperson caught en flagrante .  Yes, you were set up, but 4x a year you stand on the pulpit and rail against that activity.  There's no such thing as being set up if you're supposed to not only know the rules, but be on top of them and -- oh yeah -- do a little bit of legislating yourself.  And if your nephew is Governor of that state, then no one set you up, sister...

I don't really understand why politicians never say that they made a mistake. Pelosi probably wasn't entirely clear what the rules were that day. She lives in DC most of the year. When I look for the Alameda County rules on the internet it can be confusing. It is something she should have done herself. Depending on your staff to do it isn't always the right thing to do. It would have been easy and smarter to say that she made an error, she depended on others to clarify the rules when it would have been better to do it herself, and now she will be more careful to know what is allowed. Why can't these people say this?

I'm pretty sure you can now get an outdoor hair cut in most Bay Area counties. I've thought of paying my "stylist" to come to my house to cut my hair on the back porch.

I've had both and have probably saved thousands of dollars on hair cutting over my lifetime as a result.

I heard her being interviewed about it yesterday. What she actually said was quite close to your suggestion here. She complained about how it was a set up, but still acknowledged that she made a mistake, and took responsibility for having made that mistake.

It does seem that a quick "I'm sorry, I made a mistake" isn't that hard and usually helps things blow over.  We don't get much of that from politicians.  However it is tougher to do if you really do think you were set-up.  Seems like part of that is an easy question to answer -- Pelosi says she only took the mask off while washing hair and transferring to the chair.  Salon owner could easily release the rest of the tape and demonstrate Pelosi is a liar.  But if the rest of the tape only shows Pelosi wearing a mask then easier to understand that she is pissed-off.  But the right move would still be to call it a learning experience and say you are sorry.

I heard her being interviewed about it yesterday. What she actually said was quite close to your suggestion here. She complained about how it was a set up, but still acknowledged that she made a mistake, and took responsibility for having made that mistake.

I am obviously distinctly in the minority here, but the defense of "I made a mistake" just doesn't cut it. We are ALL supposed to know what the rules are. Granted, the ever-changing nature of the rules make it difficult. I think in some places barbers were allowed to open for two or three days and then had to shut down again. If it was a situation where there had just been a rule change, it would be explicable that Pelosi didn't know. That isn't the case. It was her responsibility to know and she did not. That isn't a mistake. That is failure to do your duty as a citizen. A "mistake" would be misunderstanding what the rule said. She is not claiming that was the case.

As an aside, my SO was planning to attend a group exercise class yesterday. It was originally to be outside, but it was raining and moved inside so she didn't go.  I asked why it is going inside and questioned if that was even allowed.  She said she didn't know and it isn't allowed. So I asked if she was going to call and report the guy for violating health ordinances.  She said no. So this fitness trainer guy welcomed I don't know what it was 10 or 15 people inside his studio and didn't let them know it was not allowed. No word yet on if he was punk'ing any elected representative and outing them on social media.

This is exactly the situation that keeps us from "being Germany". You have to believe that the trainer knew it wasn't allowed. You also have to believe that virtually all the people who attended knew that too. Yet they went, and nobody said a word. If somebody was sick and there is an outbreak, it will be touted as a "super spreader" event. Small wonder the USA can't seem to beat this virus back. We are real concerned and law-abiding. We would never do a Sturgis. Except when we do.

Well...I'm a little surprised at death threats.  Are they false flag operations?  I think self-reported death threats and complaints of Yelp review bombing (all her business listings have an average 4-star rating) are a little overblown, and given how quickly she turned to conservative media to sell her story, I have no doubt she is looking to burnish her image as a small business martyr.

I don't wish death upon her.  She has gotten her 15 min of fame, and she'll milk it for all it's worth I'm sure.  I wonder what her stylist has in terms of documentation from the owner regarding the go-ahead to use the space...

That salon owner sure is dumb. It's not Pelosi's fault her salon was closed. But more importantly, she is really popular in S.F. That business is going to suffer big time from doing such an underhanded thing.

I have no idea if the business will suffer or not. Right now, it is suffering a lot anyway, so they may not care. Was Pelosi set up? It sure looks like it. However, using the old test that morality is what you do when you think nobody is watching, Pelosi pretty much fails the test IMHO. Unfortunately, I think (well, in my neighborhood I know) that there are plenty of people who are very compliant except when they are not. This is a problem, and has been all along. We couldn't "crush the curve" at least partially because of this problem. It isn't just Pelosi. It is lots of us.

There is (correctly IMHO) lots of condemnation of the people who won't wear masks and who think COVID-19 is "a hoax". They are a big problem. However, there are also unfortunately even more people who "mostly" comply. As has been pointed out on this board, the "mostly" standard isn't going to allow us to control the disease. Put these two types of non-compliance together, coupled with people who will not follow quarantine/isolation requirements and we are where we are.

I would agree with the thrust of this post if not for the "Pelosi's office checked with the salon owner to see if it was within the guidelines to go to the salon" little factoid. It's not up to a customer to know the protocols. It's up to the business owner.  And most customers expect businesses to be honest with them when they ask questions.
