Years ago we had a public school system that was among the best in the country, now, not so much. The inability to trim crappy teachers is a real problem.

While we witnessed a NABET strike at ABC decades ago that hampered the network and especially hurt the legion of freelancers depending on a fair wage the IA Hollywood locals don’t use a threat of strike and the producers appreciate it. Listened to the President of the United Steelworkers Union in the late 80's. US manufacturing was being crushed by the Japanese at the time, and his response on how to resolve the competitive imbalance? Unionize Japan. Had to laugh at that one. . . .

As for the negotiation process I sat in on one back in the 70's. Realized how important it was and how much I disliked sitting around the table. Bowed out and let those who enjoyed it to go for it. LOL.

My brother-in-law is an AV director for a CA JC and in a union. Even though JCs are closed, he's still getting paid. Students are paying for online classes, so the money to pay still exists.  If he wasn't in a union, he'd have been furloughed.  My beef isn' that he is being paid, it's that the State has no ability to have him do another job, like fire suppression, contact tracing, poll working. Whatever it is the state or County needs done.

As for Scott, not hiring union workers is shortsighted as Phogge suggested.  You aren't going to get people as skilled at their trades in the entertainment industry if using non-union labor.  It's a manifestation of how he has no problem taking more than he needs for himself, but aims to squeeze others.  That's what makes him a POS.

While I generally agree with the importance of price signals and the laws of supply and demand, I also recognize that the labor market is imperfect, and within that imperfect market, monopsonies get away with underpaying, and the principal-agent problem mean that upper managers get away with overpaying themselves.
