I think the rift that led to Gavin leaving was traumatic to many. He was a valuable member of the community, and it makes me sad that he left. To the extent that political comment generates insecurity, it is out of concern that it will snowball and result in a repeat of what happened with Gavin. And it is not like what happened on the Bootleg's CEB doesn't also serve as a cautionary tale.
I personally like politics and current events discussion, and I really want to believe that the group of people on this board could engage in it responsibly. On the other hand, I didn't build this thing, and it's not my figurative baby. To Yvonne, the risk is simply not worth it, and I respect her wishes (with the acknowledgment that I'm not perfect and have slipped up on occasion). Common courtesy would call for all of us to do so.
