Good for him. I've always maintained that Coach Haase is a good coach, he just hasn't shown (yet?) that he is the right coach for Stanford.
If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)

How long of a commitment is that? Who is the head coach? Will he lose valuable time forming the team over the summer; getting to know the new players and mending any remaining rifts?
It's a big year for him and Stanford basketball. I hope he can handle all that's on his plate the next 10 months.

Reminds me of Dawkins when he first took the Stanford job. Put him behind the 8-ball. Hopefully that won't happen here. Haase has his flaws, but lack of work ethic doesn't seem to be one of them, so maybe he won't suffer as a result of taking this side gig. (Sorry, meant to reply to PVTree.)

Hope he's writing daily missives to potential recruits while he's coaching that national team. Hope he proves all doubters wrong and coaches next season's team deep into the tourney. We'll see.

Despite the reputation of some Stanford coaches, I think it is hard to get to this level of coaching without having made significant sacrifices and having a good work ethic. I think the question on Haase is whether he is working efficiently. Is writing daily hand-written letters the best use of his time? Indeed, that was the critique of Dawkins; I don't think anyone viewed being an assistant coach to the national team as a vacation boondoggle. The critique was that, especially when he was starting out, whether that time could be better used getting to know his team or working on recruiting. I think for a coach who has been here several years, that's less of an issue.

My thought is that this can be great for Stanford recruiting. This gives him an opportunity to meet with athletes that might decide to choose Stanford (as a freshman or a transfer). For others, the fact that he was chosen for this position is another bullet point in favor of Stanford. It also might give Haase better insight into what is important for this cohort of athletes, perhaps giving him a better footing to know what to emphasize to a potential recruit. (Obviously he already is on top of what is important for recruits, but spending time with more of them may give him further insight.)

What he's doing is keeping himself "in-play", networked and marketable. Haase will never take Stanford basketball into anything close to an elite level. If he were that guy we'd know by now. Everybody knows this. They just cannot or will not cop to it.

I suppose it depends on one's definition of elite level, but I guess I'm in the "will not cop to it" category. I haven't given up 100% on Haase at Stanford. But I'd be fine with regular trips to the NCAA tournament and the occasional Sweet Sixteen. Your standards may be higher.

Haase (or Adam Cohen) is really good at spotting undeveloped potential. And, he's developed some players (Terry, da Silva, deLaire, etc.) After that, I dunno. Last year's end year cluster @#$% left me cold. I'd love to be wrong as I thought he was an excellent hire.

That is an excellent question! I would have given up this year had it not been for Covid--although I note the injuries, deaths in a player's family, etc.
However, I am optimistic that the 2021-22 basketball season will approach normal in terms of the external factors that derailed 2020-21. If that comes to pass, then I will give up on Haase if Stanford does not make the NCAA tournament this coming year.
