And though they won 104 games, the 1942 Dodgers still lost the pennant to the 106-game winning Cardinals.  The war hadn't yet drained the majors of able-bodied players yet, so the Dodgers and Cardinals were able to keep the majority of their stars in the first full year of WWII, including Dodgers Pete Reiser, Dixie Walker, Dolph Camilli, Pee Wee Reese, Arky Vaughan, and Billy Herman and Cardinals Walker Cooper, Marty Marion, Stan Musial, Enos Slaughter, Harry "the Hat" Walker and Terry Moore.  They also had Johnny Beazley, a very sad story. Beazley went 21-6, had a bright future, went to war, came back in 1946 to find his skills had vanished.  Like a lot of ballplayers, he played for the Army team.  He felt pain in his arm, but his commanding officer ordered him to pitch through it.  And that essentially finished him.
